Ambitious Climate Pledge To Make Amazon Carbon Neutral By 2040

  •  Amazon will become the first signatory of the newly formed "Climate Pledge," a pact announced by company founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years early. 
  • The pledge would require companies to implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris agreement and calls on signatories to be at net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040.
  • Any remaining carbon emissions would be neutralized with quantifiable and permanent offsets to achieve the pledge's goal.

Industry Players Join Hands To Launch Packaging Waste Management Venture, Aim To Mobilise Rs 1k Cr

  •  To address the growing concern of plastic waste in India, 32 companies including PepsiCo India, Coca-Cola India, Bisleri, Diageo and Reliance Industries have come together to launch a packaging waste management venture and aim to mobilise over Rs 1,000 crore for the purpose.
  • Developed and incubated by the Packaging Association for Clean Environment (PACE), as part of the venture, the participating companies will mobilise and converge assets, resources and investment upwards of Rs 1,000 crore, which will include the existing infrastructure of the member companies and fresh investments.
  • The vision of this venture is to ensure that no recyclable packaging material ends up in landfills by 2025.

2019 Ozone Hole Could Be Smallest In Three Decades

  •  The ozone hole over Antarctica in 2019 could be one of the smallest seen in three decades, say scientists.
  • Observations of the gas's depletion high in the atmosphere demonstrate that it hasn't opened up in 2019 in the way it normally does.
  • The EU's Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) says it's currently well under half the area usually seen in mid-September.
  • The hole is also off-centre and far from the pole.

India to Generate 175 GW Of Clean Energy By 2022

  •  Union Minister for Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan said that the country was on course to generate 175 GW of clean energy by 2022.
  • The country has set a target of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases between 33 per cent and 35 per cent to combat climate change and global warming. So far, the country has been able to reduce it to 21 per cent.

Railways To Undertake " Massive Shramdan" Drive From Sep 17

  •  Railways will undertake - Massive Shramdan drive with main focus on collection of plastic waste. This Shramdan is for enhanced cleanliness, through collection of plastic waste from all railway premises and creating awareness for a greater impact against single use plastic.
  • Railway Board has also sent a letter to all Divisional heads, directing that this massive Sharamdan should be arranged at each and every station and nearby localities.
  • The Ministry has asked all Divisional Heads to provide plastic bottle crushing machines, at over four thousand stations by the 2nd October, 2019.
