India Signs MoU with Namibia for Reintroduction of Extinct Cheetahs

India and Namibia signed a crucial memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the reintroduction of cheetahs, declared extinct in the country in 1952.
As per reports, the first batch comprising four male and four female cheetahs will arrive from Namibia in August.
The fastest land animal in the world would find a new home in the Kuno-Palpur National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district.

Britain Breaks its Record for Highest Temperature as Europe Battles Heat Wave

Britain shattered its record for highest temperature ever registered, with a provisional reading of 39.1 degrees Celsius (102.4 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the country's weather office — and the heat was only expected to rise.
The highest temperature previously recorded in Britain was 38.7 C (101.7 F), a record set in 2019. The highest temperature ever registered 39.1 C (102.4 F) was in Charlwood, England in July 2022.

Australia's Environment in 'Shocking' Decline, Report Finds

According to an anticipated report, Australia's environment is in a shocking state and faces further decline from amplifying threats.
The survey of Australia's ecological systems, conducted every five years, found widespread abrupt changes.
These can be blamed on climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and mining.
The threats are not being adequately managed - meaning they are on track to cause more problems.

Andhra Pradesh Launches First-ever Blackbuck Survey on Godavari Islands

The Andhra Pradesh State Wildlife Department kick-started the first-ever survey of blackbucks along a stretch of islands in the Godavari between Dowleswaram and Yanam with the goal of drawing up a conservation plan to protect the endangered species.
The survey was mooted in the wake of scores of blackbucks getting stranded on the islands that were hit by the Godavari floods.
The islands surrounded by the branches of the Godavari, such as the Gowthami, Vasista, Vainteya and Vridha Gowthami, in Konaseema and East Godavari districts are a major habitat for blackbucks, which roam across the region close to human habitations.

How Does Caribbean Fire Coral Thrive as Others Vanish?

Fire corals can be the bane of a scuba diver's existence. An accidental brush against one can cause agonizing pain. But they also may help save Caribbean reefs, which have been plagued by hurricanes, global warming, disease, and an overabundance of algae. A long-term study has revealed that fire corals (Millepora) are thriving there even as other corals disappear and could help preserve some of the 3D environment that helps make reefs such great homes to fish and other organisms.
Fire coral "are going to be very important habitat providers because they are able to survive under these stresses," says Colleen Bove, a marine ecologist at Boston University who was not involved with the work.

Ministry of Environment Organises "Hariyali Mahotsav"

Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change organised "Hariyali Mahotsav" at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi in the spirit of "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav".
Hariyali Mahotsav, the "Tree Festival" was organised to create awareness about the importance of trees in sustaining not only the life of the present generations but also to secure the future of forthcoming generations.
Hariyali Mahotsav 2022 was organised by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in collaboration with the State Governments, Police Institutions and Schools of Delhi for undertaking plantation drives on the occasion.
