Agents to Get Excellence Awards

  • For the first time in 132 years of existence, the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India's internal intelligence agency, is recognising its officers and those in the state intelligence wings for exceptional performance with a medal of its own – Asadharan Aasuchna Kushalta Padak (medal for extraordinary intelligence gathering).
  • Three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and 34 other intelligence officers were the first recipients of the gallantry medal, awarded for exceptional counter-terror operations, services in Jammu and Kashmir, cracking down on terror funding, and operations against Maoists and militant groups in the north-east, said a senior official who didn't want to be named.
  • Apart from the three IPS officers, 14 officers from the state intelligence wings and 23 officers from IB cadre too were awarded for "exceptional operations.

  • The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) was presented the 'best Sports Federation' award in the country by the Association Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM).
  • NRAI secretary-general D.V.S. Rao and secretary Rajeev Bhatia received the trophy from Director General of SAI Neelam Kapoor and cricketer Madan Lal.

Best Sportspersons' Awards

  • Asian Games gold medal-winning wrestler Bajrang Punia, hockey star Rani Rampal, Test cricketer Rishabh Pant and pistol shooting prodigy Manu Bhaker were presented the Delhi Sports Journalists Association (DSJA) 'Best Sportspersons' awards. The awards were given away by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra.

The Bodley Medal

  •  Nobel laureate Amartya Sen was awarded the Bodley Medal by the University of Oxford, an honour that goes back to 1646, for his outstanding contribution in various fields, including literature, culture, science and communication.
  • The medal is awarded by the university's Bodleian Library, one of the oldest and largest libraries in Western Europe that houses rare manuscripts and collections linked to India.
  • The medal was instituted in 1646 by Thomas Bodley, founder of the libraries.
  • Sen received the medal in Oxford during an event called the 'Founder's Lunch' from Chris Patten, chancellor of the university, and Richard Ovenden, librarian.
  • The Bodley Medal is awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to the worlds in which the Bodleian Libraries is active.

Afghan Star

  •  An Afghan woman has become the first to win a popular singing competition.
  • Zahra Elham from Afghanistan's Hazara ethnic minority snatched first place from her male runner-up on Afghan Star, a local version of American Idol, in which hundreds of men and women have competed for 14 seasons.
  • Known for her high pitch and raspy voice, she had previously said she wanted to break the grasp of male winners on the competition, first launched in 2005 and one of Afghanistan's most popular television shows.

IBJA Awards 2019

  •  Zee Business, the Business news channel of Zee Media Group has bagged three prestigious awards at the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Awards 2019.
  • The three awards were in the category of Best Business Channel, Icon of Business Journalism and Best Commodity Anchor.
  • While Zee Business Managing Editor Anil Singhvi bagged the Icon of Business Journalism award, the Best Commodity Anchor hindi went to Mrituenjay Jha.
  • India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd. (IBJA) was established in 1919 to adopt a multi-faceted approach to the problems and challenges faced by the bullion traders in the country.
