Women's T20 World Cup 2024: ICC Announces 134 per cent Increase in Prize Money for Winners

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) will be paying $2.34 million to the winners of Women's T20 World Cup 2024 - an increment of 134 per cent from previous edition's $1 million prize money.
  • The overall prize money was also increased from last edition's $2.45 million to $7.95 million - an increase of 225%. The increment in prize money is part of the ICC's initiative of bringing women's cricket on par with men's cricket.
  • This is also the first time the prize money awarded to women cricketers will be equal to their men counterparts in the same event.

India Wins Asian Champions Trophy Hockey

  • India men's hockey team beat China 1-0 in the Asian Champions Trophy final and won the tournament. India, the 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medalist, remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.
  • It was a hard-fought win for India, who managed only a single goal in the 51st minute, thanks to a brilliant pass by skipper Harmanpreet off which Jugraj Singh scored the goal. This was the fifth Asian Champions Trophy title for India.

17-Year-Old Indian Shuttler Anmol Kharb Wins First Singles International Title in Belgium

  • India's 17-year-old Anmol Kharb clinched her first international title in women's singles as she beat Denmark's Amalie Schulz in a hard-fought final in the Belgian International badminton tournament.
  • Anmol Kharb became the women's singles national badminton champion at the age of 16 and a year later, proved to be the driving force behind the Indian women's team bagging a historic gold medal at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia.

Saleema Imtiaz Becomes First Pakistan's Woman Umpire on ICC's International Development Panel

  • Pakistan's Saleema Imtiaz became the first woman to be nominated for the ICC International Panel of development umpires said Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
  • Saleema's nomination on the panel means she is now eligible to officiate in women's bilateral international matches and ICC women's events.
  • Saleema joined the PCB's women's umpires panel in 2008 and has officiated in several Asian Cricket Council tournaments over the last three years.

Neeraj Chopra Finishes Second in Diamond League Final, Misses Crown by 1 cm

  • Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra missed the Diamond League crown by just one centimetre as he finished second for the second consecutive year with a throw of 87.86m in the season finale in Brussels.
  • Chopra, who had won the DL trophy in 2022 before finishing second last year, achieved his best throw of the day in his third attempt but that was 1cm short of eventual winner Anderson Peters' 87.87m effort.
  • Grenada's Peters, a two-time world champion, produced his best throw of the day in his opening attempt. Julian Weber of Germany was third with 85.97m.
  • Peters collected a Diamond League trophy and USD 30,000 for emerging as the DL champion this season.
  • Chopra pocketed USD 12,000 for his second-place finish in the grand finale which marked the end of the prestigious Diamond League series after 14 legs, as well as the end of international athletics season.

Manipur's T.G. English School Wins Junior Boys Title of 63rd Subroto Cup (15)

  • In football, Manipur's T.G. English School clinched the Junior Boys title of the 63rd Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, defeating Meghalaya's Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School 4-3 via a sudden-death tiebreaker, after both teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time. The final match was played at BR Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. It was the third time in history, first in 44 years that a team from Manipur lifted the coveted trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo Creates History, Surpasses 1 Billion Followers across All Social Media Platform

  • Portugal football star Cristiano Ronaldo made history, becoming the first person to surpass 1 billion followers across all social media platforms.
  • Ronaldo, who plays professional football for Al-Nassr club in Saudi Arabia, has 639 million followers on Instagram, about 170.5 million followers on Facebook and 113 million on X. Ronaldo's YouTube channel has reached 50 million subscribers within a week. The football star shared the milestone on X after he breached the historic 1 billion mark across the all social media platforms.
  • The Portugal football star is far ahead of Argentina football captain and FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and Brazil's Neymar.

International Cricket Returns to J&K

  • It is after four long decades that Kashmir Valley will be witnessing International Cricket Matches. Indian and International cricketing stars will be playing cricket in the Valley after almost half a century during the final leg of the Legends League Cricket. The series would kick-start on September 20 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
  • Srinagar would be hosting over 100 international cricket stars in October for the Legends League Cricket. Cricketers like Mohammad Kaif, Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Chris Gayle, Ross Taylor, lan Bell, and others will be live in action in Kashmir for the first time ever. Seven matches, including the final, will be played between October 9 and October 16 at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.
