Atal Bihari Vajpayee Death Anniversary

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to former Prime Minister and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary on August 16.
They were joined by other dignitaries, including Union ministers, and leaders from different parties in paying homage to Vajpayee at his memorial 'Sadaiv Atal'.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee (December 25, 1924 –August 16, 2018) was an Indian politician and poet who served three terms as the Prime Minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004. He was the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full term in the office.
His stewardship of the country between 1998-2004 is known for reforms and boost to infrastructure sectors. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 93 years.

Bangladesh's Interim Government Cancels Holiday on National Mourning Day

The interim government of Bangladesh cancelled a national holiday on August 15 that marks the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former PM and the father of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The decision was approved at the advisory council meeting of the interim government in Dhaka. Several parties, including Hasina's Awami League attended the meeting. The parties backed the interim government's decision to cancel the holiday on August 15.
August 15 is remembered as the National Mourning Day in Bangladesh, marking Mujibur Rahman's assassination in 1975. Mujib, the founder of Bangladesh, was popularly known as 'Bangabandhu', meaning 'friend of Bengal'.

World Organ Donation Day

World Organ Donation Day is observed every year on August 13 to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and encourage people to register as organ donors. Donations of organs such as kidneys, heart, pancreas, eyes, and lungs can save the lives of people suffering from chronic diseases globally.
The history of organ transplantation dates back to the early 20th century, with significant milestones marking its evolution. The first successful kidney transplant occurred in 1954, when Ronald Lee Herrick donated a kidney to his identical twin brother, a groundbreaking procedure performed by Dr. Joseph Murray.
World Organ Donation Day 2024 is observed under the slogan, 'Be the Reason for Someone's Smile Today!'

International Left-Handers Day

International Left-Handers Day is celebrated on August 13. The day recognises the uniqueness of left-handed individuals. It also raises awareness about the challenges they face in a world designed primarily by right-handed people.
This day was first observed in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, who founded the Left-Handers Club in the United States. Campbell, himself a left-hander, wanted to promote awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed in a predominantly right-handed world.

International Youth Day

International Youth Day is observed on August 12 every year. It is celebrated to mark the contributions of the youth in the development of society alongside understanding the challenges faced by them. The day is celebrated through various awareness campaigns, community concerts, and events to bring to notice the socio-economic and socio-political issues that the youth in every nation face.
The United Nations declared in 1999 that August 12 would be the annual International Youth Day. It was based on a suggestion to the UN General Assembly made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon on December 17, 1999. It was first celebrated on August 12, 2000, and since then, the day has been used to educate the general public.
The 2024 theme for International Youth Day is 'From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development'.

World Elephant Day

World Elephant Day is an annual international event held on August 12 to promote the conservation and protection of elephants worldwide.
The World Elephant Day was co-founded on August 12, 2012, by Patricia Sims from Canada and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand, an initiative of HM Queen Sirikit of Thailand.
Patricia Sims has remained at the forefront of World Elephant Day's leadership since its inception.
Over the years, this initiative has established partnerships with 100 elephant conservation organizations worldwide and has garnered the support of countless individuals across the globe.
The active participation of millions of people in acknowledging World Elephant Day showcases the widespread love for elephants and the collective desire to contribute to their well-being.
The theme for World Elephant Day 2024 is 'Personifying prehistoric beauty, theological relevance, and environmental importance'.

World Biofuel Day

World Biofuel Day is observed annually on August 10 to raise awareness about the significance of biofuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels. This day serves as a platform to highlight the advancements in biofuel technologies and the policies supporting their adoption globally and in India.
World Biofuel Day is observed to honour Sir Rudolf Diesel for his research experiments. In the year 1983, he successfully ran a diesel engine with the help of peanut oil by predicting that vegetable oil would replace fossil fuels in the next century to fuel various mechanical engines.
The theme for World Biofuel Day 2024 is 'Sustainable Biofuels: Reducing Waste, Feeding Energy'.

World Lion Day

World Lion Day is an international annual event observed on the 10th of August. World Lion Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of lions. The wild cat 'Asiatic Lion' is considered a vulnerable and endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List
World Lion Day was established in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue, the world's largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions.
It was co-founded by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, a husband-and-wife team who recognised the urgent need to highlight the declining lion populations and the threats they were encountering in their natural habitats.
In collaboration with "National Geographic," the Jouberts initiated the Big Cat Initiative (B.C.I.) in 2009.
Since then, World Lion Day has been observed annually on August 10. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the conservation challenges faced by lions and to celebrate the beauty and significance of these iconic large felines.
