National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day is observed on August 7 every year. This day recognises the importance of handloom weavers to the nation's economy and culture. India's handloom sector boasts a rich cultural heritage. India's artisan community has kept traditional crafts alive by reimagining them in fresh, contemporary styles that appeal to today's consumers.
The Swadeshi Movement launched on August 7, 1905 had encouraged indigenous industries and in particular handloom weavers. In 2015, the Government of India declared August 7 as the National Handloom Day, commemorating the momentous occasion.
The first National Handloom Day was celebrated on August 7, 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai.
The theme for National Handloom Day 2025 is 'Handlooms – Empowering Women, Empowering the Nation'.

Hiroshima Day

The world observed the 80^th anniversary of the first use of a nuclear weapon as Hiroshima Day on August 6, 2025. On this day in 1945, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb, codenamed 'Little Boy', on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. People across Japan remember this day as one of the darkest days in the country's history.
Hiroshima Day is observed annually on this day to commemorate the victims of the world's first nuclear attack. In addition to being a day of remembrance for the lives lost.

Friendship Day in India

Every year Friendship Day in India or National Friendship Day of India is celebrated across the country on the first Sunday of August, which fell on August 3 this year (2025).
Countries like Bangladesh, UAE, Malaysia, and the US also celebrate the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day, while the United Nations (UN) celebrates Friendship Day as International Friendship Day on the 30^th of July.

World Lung Cancer Day

Every year on August 1, the world observes World Lung Cancer Day to unite in spreading awareness, encouraging early detection, and promoting preventive measures. This day reminds us that awareness can save lives, and early recognition of symptoms plays a vital role in improving survival rates.
World Lung Cancer Day was first observed in 2012 through the combined efforts of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) and several patient advocacy groups. The initiative aimed to bring global attention to lung cancer, which, despite being a leading cause of cancer deaths, often remained under-recognised and misunderstood.

World Wide Web Day

The World Wide Web Day is observed on August 1 to remember the birth of the WWW and to lay special emphasis on how it really changed society. It is a day to think of the web as a link for individuals, as a facilitator for innovation, and as an advocate for a better digital future- one that everybody can access.
The inception of the World Wide Web can be traced back to the visionary efforts of Tim Berners-Lee, who proposed the concept in 1989.

Maharashtra to Celebrate M. S. Swaminathan's Birth Anniversary as Sustainable Agriculture Day

The Maharashtra government announced that August 7, the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna M.S. Swaminathan, will be observed as Sustainable Agriculture Day. This decision recognises the legendary scientist's pioneering contribution to Indian agriculture, particularly his role in boosting the production of wheat and rice, which led to India's Green Revolution.
