International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

August 9 is celebrated as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples across the world. The celebration highlights the role of indigenous people and the importance of preserving their rights, communities and knowledge they gathered and passed down over centuries.
On December 23, 1994, the UNGA, passed resolution 49/214, declaring August 9 as the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. On this date, in 1982, the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations had held its first meeting.
The theme of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 2022 was "The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge."

Nagasaki Day

Japan commemorates the 9th of August every year as Nagasaki day. On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. It was code-named "Fat Man" due to the design of the bomb as it had a wide, round shape. On August 9, 1945, a US B-29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb on the city, killing nearly 20,000 people. The year 2022 marked the 77th anniversary of the incident.

UGC Asks Varsities to Observe August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

The University Grants Commission (UGC) asked all the universities and colleges to organise programmes and seminars to observe August 14 as "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day" to commemorate the sufferings and sacrifices of millions of Indians during the partition in 1947.
UGC chairman Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar said that Prime Minister announced in 2021 about August 14 as "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day" to remind the nation of the sufferings and sacrifices of millions of Indians and the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.

India Observes 2nd 'Javelin Throw Day'

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) celebrated the second 'Javelin Throw Day' on August 7, 2022. The day was first observed in 2021 in honour of Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won India's first Olympic gold medal in athletics at Tokyo. This decision to observe Javelin Throw Day is also an attempt to attract more youth towards the sport and get champions ready for a bright future in athletics ahead.
Neeraj Chopra scripted history at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo when he threw the javelin to a distance of 87.58m to end India's medal drought in athletics at the Olympics.

National Handloom Day

The National Handloom Day is observed on August 7 every year in India. On this day, the government and other organisations honour the handloom weaving community for their immense contribution to the socio-economic development of the country. The day also marks India's reaffirmation of protecting its glorious handloom heritage and empowering weavers and workers with greater opportunities to ensure livelihoods.
In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared August 7 as National Handloom Day.

Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day is observed every year on August 6 to promote peace politics and raise awareness of the effects of the bomb attack on Hiroshima. Hiroshima city was attacked by an atomic weapon that killed thousands of lives instantly on August 6, 1945. It was the first city to be attacked by a nuclear bomb.
The US created two atomic bombs named 'The Little Boy' dropped in the city of Hiroshima and 'The Fat Man' in the city of Nagasaki on August 6 and 9 respectively.

U.S. Coast Guard Day

U.S. Coast Guard Day is held every August 4 to honour the establishment of the U.S. Coast Guard and the courageous work of the service members of the Coast Guard.
It is an internal event celebration for active and reserve Coast Guard members, their civilian employees, retirees and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Coast Guard also participates in Armed Forces Week and Armed Forces Day.
The United States Coast Guard was established on 4 August, 1790 by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton and later on known as the Revenue Marine. Let us tell you that Alexander Hamilton authorised the construction of ten vessels which is known as Revenue Service cutters. They were intended to enforce the earliest United States tariff laws.
