World Oceans Day

  • World Oceans Day is observed every year on June 8 to remind everyone of the important role the massive water bodies play in the lives of human beings. On this day, we also spread awareness about the dangers facing our oceans and how we can protect them.
  • The day was first declared at the Global Forum, a parallel event at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. An event was organised "Oceans Day at Global Forum – the Blue Planet" by the Oceans Institute of Canada and supported by the Canadian Government.
  • In 2008 the General Assembly passed an official resolution to mark June 8 as World Oceans Day.
  • 'Awaken New Depths' is the theme for World Oceans Day 2024.

World Brain Tumour Day

  • World Brain Tumour Day is observed on June 8 every year to raise awareness about brain tumours and provide support for patients. The day also offers an opportunity to highlight the need for research to develop new treatments and therapies.
  • The history of World Brain Tumour Day dates back to 2000, when a Leipzig-based non-profit organization, the German Brain Tumour Association, first proposed that a day be set aside to raise awareness about brain tumours. The day was first designated on June 8, 2000, following a proposal by the German Brain Tumour Association.
  • 'Brain Health and Prevention' is the theme for World Brain Tumour Day 2024.

World Food Safety Day

  • World Food Safety Day (WFSD) is observed on June 7 every year. The United Nations established the day to highlight the importance of food safety and the need to prevent, detect, and manage foodborne hazards in order to ensure food security for all. WFSD is observed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) jointly with the cooperation of Member States and other relevant organizations.
  • The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on December 20, 2018 and declared June 7 as World Safety Day.
  • The theme for World Food Safety Day 2024 is 'Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected'.

UN Russian Language Day

  • UN Russian Language Day is observed annually on June 6 and was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2010. This day is dedicated to promoting the study and appreciation of the Russian language. It coincides with the birthday of Aleksandr Pushkin, one of the most prominent Russian writers and creators.

World Environment Day

  • World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on the 5th of June. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the WED in 1972. World Environment Day is one of the biggest international events for the environment. It is a platform that raises awareness about the environmental problems faced by our planet. The day also serves as a platform to promote environmental changes and sustainable practices. This year (2024), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted the 2024 Environment Day celebration during which land restoration, desertification and drought resilience were the key topics of discussion.
  • Since 1973, World Environment Day is observed annually on the 5th of June. The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 1972 to raise awareness and promote action for environmental protection.
  • The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is 'Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience'.

International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

  • Every year on June 4 the world observes the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the suffering endured by children globally. This day highlights the physical, mental, and emotional abuse that many children face and honours the efforts of countless individuals and organizations striving to protect and uphold children's rights. Established by the United Nations, the day aims to safeguard the rights of children who have been subjected to violence, sexual abuse, abduction, and trauma.
  • On August 19, 1982, the UN General Assembly's special session focused on the plight that Palestinian and Lebanese children faced due to Israeli aggression during the Lebanon war. The assembly further pledged to protect the rights of the children in Lebanon. The UN General Assembly announced that every year, on June 4, International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression will be observed.
