Nancy Pelsoi Re-elected as Speaker of US House of Representatives

  • Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was narrowly re-elected as the speaker of the US House of Representatives for the 117th Congress.
  • Pelosi from the Democratic Party secured 216 votes in a tight contest against Republican Kevin McCarthy, who got support from 209 Congressmen.
  • According to the House Clerk, a total of 427 votes were cast. One vote went to Senator Tammy Duckworth and one to Congressman Hakeem Jeffries.
  • Notably, six Democratic lawmakers did not vote for Pelosi, while all the 209 Republicans stood by McCarthy, who is now the House Minority Leader. The Democratic Party has 222 seats in the House.
  • The US House of Representatives has a strength of 435 voting members and six non-voting members. 

Former Union Home Minister Buta Singh Passes Away

  • Former Union Home Minister Buta Singh, who remained in public service for a long time and served under four Prime Ministers, died at AIIMS. He was 86.
  • The senior Congress leader was in coma since October last year.
  • Singh began his political career with the Akali Dal in the 1960s. He was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1962 on an Akali Dal ticket from Moga in Punjab but switched to the Congress soon. He was reelected to Lok Sabha in 1967, the second time from Ropar on a Congress ticket. In all, he was an eight-term Lok Sabha MP.
  • He became a minister for the first time in 1974; there was no looking back after that.

Gautam Chauhan Becomes First to Head ARMY'S Human Rights Cell

  • For the first time, the Indian Army has appointed a major general rank officer to look into the human rights issue and suggest means to better the track record of the force.
  • Major General Gautam Chauhan took charge as Additional Director General Human Rights and will function under the Indian Army Vice Chief Lieutenant General SK Saini.
  • Before taking charge of the force's first special human rights cell at the Army Headquarters, Major General Chauhan was serving as Brigadier Operations Logistics at Headquarters of the Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS).  He was the nodal man for COVID-19 related issues for tri-services.

Suneet Sharma New Chairman & CEO of Railway Board

  • Suneet Sharma has been appointed as the new Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board (Ministry of Railways) and ex-officio Principal Secretary to Government of India.
  • The appointments' committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Suneet Sharma as Chairman & CEO of Railway Board. Prior to this, Suneet Sharma worked as General Manager, Eastern Railway.
  • Suneet Sharma joined the Indian Railways in 1979 as a Special Class Apprentice while he was studying engineering at IIT Kanpur. A graduate in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering he has more than 40 years of experience serving in the Indian Railways in various capacities. He has done stints in Operational working, maintenance in Sheds, Depots and Workshops.

Maharashtra Police Chief Subodh Kumar Jaiswal Appointed CISF DG

  • Maharashtra police Chief Subodh Kumar Jaiswal has been appointed the Director General of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF.
  • Jaiswal is a 1985-batch IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved appointment of Jaiswal to the post of Director General, CISF from the date of joining the post and up to September 30, 2022, i.e. date of his superannuation.

Renowned Music Director Shantanu Mohapatra Passes Away

  • Legendary music director Shantanu Mohapatra passed away at a private hospital. He was 84.
  • Mohapatra has been associated with Odia music industry for almost 60 years. He has many firsts to his credits in the field of Odia music as a music composer.
  • He composed the first modern Odia ballad 'Konark Gatha' with lyricist Gurukrushna Goswami and sung by Akshay Mohanty.
  • He also worked with several Bollywood artists like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Usha Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadekar, Anuradha Paudwal, Usha Uthup, and Kavita Krishnamurthy.
  • Born in Mayurbhanj district in 1936, the legendary music director was a geophysicist (an IIT-Kharagpur alumnus) and worked with Odisha Mining Corporation.

Pierre Cardin Father of Fashion Branding Passes Away

  • French couturier Pierre Cardin, who made his name by selling designer clothes to the masses, and his fortune by being the first to exploit that name as a brand for selling everything from cars to perfume, died at the age of 98.
  • In a career spanning more than 60 years, Cardin drew scorn and admiration from fellow fashion designers for his brash business sense. He maintained that he built his business empire without ever asking a bank for a loan.
  • Cardin was the first designer to sell clothes collections in department stores in the late 1950s, and the first to enter the licensing business for perfumes, accessories and even food - now a major profit driver for many fashion houses.
