Indian Navy's P8i Aircraft Lands in France for Varuna Exercise

  • In a significant demonstration of growing Indo-French naval cooperation, the Indian Navy's P-8I aircraft made its first-ever deployment in Europe, at Air Base 125 Istres-Le Tube in France. This deployment marked a historic moment as the aircraft joined the French Navy for the 22nd edition of Exercise Varuna, a biennial bilateral naval exercise that underscores the deepening synergy between the two nations' maritime forces.
  • The Varuna Exercise, initiated in 1993 and christened with its current name in 2001, has evolved into a key component of the India-France strategic bilateral relationship. The 22nd edition of Exercise Varuna was conducted in the Mediterranean Sea from September 2-4, 2024. It involved advanced tactical exercises designed to enhance interoperability and operational capabilities between the two navies.

India, South Africa Ink Pact on Submarine Rescue Operations

  • The navies of India and South Africa signed an implementation agreement to enhance submarine rescue support cooperation that ensures the safety of the South African Navy's submarine crew in times of distress or accident.
  • Under this agreement, the Indian Navy will provide assistance by deploying its Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) when required, further strengthening the collaborative ties between the two navies. The agreement was signed by Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi and Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, Chief of the South African Navy.
  • The Implementing Agreement underscores a shared commitment to maritime safety and mutual support. This partnership reinforces the longstanding maritime relationship between India and South Africa.

Rajasthan Cabinet Approves 33% Quota for Women in Police

  • The Rajasthan Cabinet approved 33 per cent reservation to women in the police force and five per cent additional allowance to pensioners. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, also approved a proposal to allot land for a 3,150 MW solar power project.
  • As per Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa, an amendment to the Rajasthan Police Subordinate Services Rules, 1989, was approved in the cabinet meeting, paving the way for the one-third quota for women in police.

Air Marshal Tejinder Singh Takes Over as Deputy Chief of Air Staff

  • Air Marshal Tejinder Singh took over as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force.
  • After taking charge at the Air Headquarters (Vayu Bhawan), the Air Marshal paid homage to the bravehearts, who made the supreme sacrifice, by laying wreath at the National War Memorial.
  • An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Air Marshal Singh was commissioned in the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on June 13, 1987.
  • He is a Category 'A' Qualified Flying Instructor with over 4,500 hours of flying and an alumnus of the Defence Service Staff College and National Defence College.

Indian Army Launches Project NAMAN: SPARSH-Enabled Service Centres Nationwide

  • The Indian Army launched the first phase of Project NAMAN, aimed at providing dedicated support and services to Defence pensioners, veterans, and their families. The project, inaugurated by Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi and the President of the Army Wives Welfare Association, Mrs. Sunita Dwivedi, is a significant step toward enhancing the care and support for the Defence community.
  • Project NAMAN is centered around the SPARSH (System for Pension Administration Raksha) digital pension system, designed to streamline pension-related processes for Defence Pensioners. The initiative addresses the need for accessible facilitation points for veterans and their Next of Kin (NOK) across the country, with the goal of expanding these services nationwide.
  • In its first phase, 14 Common Service Centres (CSCs) have been established at key locations across India, including New Delhi, Jalandhar, Leh, Dehradun, Lucknow, Jodhpur, Bengdubi, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Secunderabad, Saugor, Guntur, Ahmedabad, and Bangalore. These CSCs, dedicated to Army Veterans, Pensioners, War Widows, and NOKs, offer SPARSH-enabled pension services, Government to Citizen (G2C) services, and Business to Consumer (B2C) services in one location.

Colombo Security Conclave signs Charter and MoU for Secretariat

  • National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the representatives of the Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka signed the Charter and an MoU for the establishment of the Colombo Security Conclave Secretariat to promote regional security by addressing transnational threats and challenges of common concern to the member states. The Colombo Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) brings together National Security Advisors (NSA) and Deputy NSAs from India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Mauritius.
  • It deals with maritime security, counter-terrorism and cyber security with India bringing to the fore its own strategic concerns in the Indian Ocean and promotes regional security by addressing transnational threats and challenges of common concern to the Member States.

INS Tabar Conducts Maritime Partnership Exercise with Spanish Navy

  • The Indian Navy's frontline frigate, INS Tabar, visited Malaga, Spain, for two days. After leaving, it participated in a maritime partnership exercise (MPX) with the Spanish Navy Ship Atalaya in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • As per the Indian Navy, India and Spain have been working together to strengthen their bilateral relations, particularly in the maritime sector.
  • The MPX conducted between the Indian Navy and the Spanish Navy in the Mediterranean Sea is a significant milestone in maritime cooperation between India and Spain. The exercises included Station Keeping, Replenishment at Sea Approaches (RASAPs), Flying Exercise (FLYEX), Steam Past, and PHOTOEX serials. Units from both navies demonstrated high levels of professionalism and commitment to enhance collaborative efforts.

HAL Partners with SAFHAL to Develop and Manufacture 'Aravalli' Helicopter Engines

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. (SAFHAL) signed an airframer contract, to commence joint design, development, manufacture, and supply and support of a new generation high-power engine named 'Aravalli'.
  • The 'Aravalli' high-power engines are used for the 13-ton Medium Lift class, the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH), being designed and developed by HAL.

Bihar Gets New Police Chief

  • Alok Raj, 1989-batch Bihar cadre IPS officer, took over as Bihar's Director General of Police (DGP). Raj replaced R. S. Bhatti, who was appointed as Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
  • In December 2022, Bhatti had been made Bihar DGP even though he was a year junior to Raj.
  • Raj is currently also DG, Vigilance Investigation Bureau, and will continue to hold the post along with his new role as DGP. He is set for retirement on December 31, 2025.
