'Agni P', New Generation Ballistic Missile, Successfully test-fired by DRDO

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested the new generation nuclear capable ballistic missile 'Agni P' from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
  • Various telemetry, radar, electro-optical stations and down range ships positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile trajectory and parameters.
  • This is noteworthy that the 'Agni P' is a two-stage canisterised solid-propellant ballistic missile with dual redundant navigation and guidance system.

Indian Navy Conducts First Sea trials for Mormugao

  • The Indian Navy conducted the first sea trials for Indian Navy's indigenously built stealth destroyer called Mormugao, in the Arabian Sea.
  • The maiden sea voyage of the warship has been built under the project P-15B.
  • Its development coincides with the 60th anniversary of liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule.
  • Mormugao is the second indigenous stealth destroyer that is being built under Project P-15B.
  • It is likely to be commissioned in mid-2022.

HAL Bags ADE-DRDO Supply Order for 'ABHYAS' Target Platform

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited secured an order for manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing and supply of High Speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) System, known as 'ABHYAS', from Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), DRDO. Post successful completion of this initial order, HAL would be identified as Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) for supply of this target system along with a private firm (50 per cent of the volume).
  • The platform is estimated to have large requirement from the tri-services, and DRDO laboratories for evaluation trials of missile programmes.
  • ABHYAS was first successfully flight-tested in May 2019 and subsequent evaluation trials are being conducted by ADE, DRDO.

Ashok Leyland Signs Pact with DRDO Arms to Develop Combat Vehicles Engines

  • Ashok Leyland, the largest supplier of Mobility Solutions to the Indian Army, has partnered with Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), an establishment of DRDO, to develop and manufacture 600hp indigenous engine to power futuristic combat vehicles.
  • As the development-cum-production partner, Ashok Leyland has developed the engine in a record time despite the total lockdown due to Covid-19.
  • The 600-HP engine will undergo rigorous testing in lab and will be qualified for application in tanks. Ashok Leyland will undertake series production of the engine post induction into service.

Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers Gets New President

  • S. P. Shukla was elected as the president of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), which has been playing an active role in boosting indigenous production of military hardware.
  • He was elected to the post by the SIDM executive council for the term 2021–2023.
  • At present, Shukla is the chairman of the boards of several companies of the Mahindra Group in the defence and aerospace sector, including Mahindra Defence Systems, Mahindra Aerostructures and Mahindra Telephonics.
  • Shukla succeeded Jayant D. Patil as the SIDM president.

HAL Signs Rs. 2,400 crore Contract with BEL

  • In a major boost to indigenisation, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited for development and supply of 20 types systems for the LCA Tejas Mk1A programme. The five-year contract spanning from 2023 to 2028 is valued at Rs. 2,400 crore and involves supplying critical avionics Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), flight control computers and night flying LRUs.
  • This is the biggest ever order that HAL has placed on any Indian company boosting 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' campaign.
  • The contract documents were handed over by General Manager LCA Tejas Division, HAL, E P Jayadeva to General Manager (EW&A) BEL, Manoj Jain.

Army Chief Gen M. M. Naravane Takes Charge as Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee

  • Army Chief Gen M. M. Naravane assumed the charge as the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee that comprises the three service chiefs.
  • The post fell vacant after the death of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat in the IAF helicopter crash. Gen Naravane was given the charge as the chairman of the committee as he is the senior-most among the three service chiefs.
  • Before the creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the senior-most among the three service chiefs used to be the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

PLA Conducts Nuclear, Chemical, Biological Warfare Drill in Tibet

  • A joint military brigade of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) carried out a real combat drill involving anti-nuclear, chemical and biological warfare in Tibet in the backdrop of the ongoing Sino-India border tension in eastern Ladakh.
  • The exercise, including commandos, armoured assault groups and soldiers trained for chemical warfare were drawn from various wings of the army.
  • It was organised by the Tibet military region under the Western theatre command (WTC), the largest of China's five commands that is responsible for the Sino-India disputed border, extending for 3,488 km from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh.

IAF-DRDO Flight-Tests Helicopter-launched SANT Missile

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully flight-tested the indigenously designed and developed Helicopter launched (air-launched) Stand-off Anti-tank (SANT) Missile from the Pokhran range in Rajasthan.
  • The missile is equipped with a state-of-the-art Millimetre Wave Seeker which provides high precision strike capability from a safe distance.
  • It can neutralise targets in a range up to 10 km. SANT missile has been designed and developed by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad.
