Vice-Admiral Atul Anand Takes Over as Additional Secretary, DMA

Vice-Admiral Atul Anand took over as Additional Secretary, Department of Military Affairs (DNA). The post was previously held by Lt Gen Anil Puri.
Anand was commissioned into the executive branch of the Indian Navy in January 1988. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA); Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur (Bangladesh) and the National Defence College, New Delhi.
Anand, a recipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), has held the command of Torpedo Recovery Vessel INTRV A72; missile boat INS Chatak; corvette INS Khukri; and INS Mumbai.

US Approves Sale of Ammunition and Parts to Taiwan in Defence Support

The United States approved to sell $440 million in ammunition and parts to Taiwan, its latest effort to boost the self-ruling island's defence as tensions simmer with China.
The sale is comparatively small in scale and does not expand the range of US weaponry to Taiwan, but came as the United States and China move delicately to stabilize their turbulent relationship.
As per reports, the State Department would sell $332.2 million in 30mm ammunition and related equipment to Taiwan and $108 million in spare and repair parts for wheeled vehicles and weapons.
The sales will help Taiwan maintain a credible defensive capability but will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

India Plans to Host Mega Air Drills Tarang Shakti

The Indian Air Force is preparing to host a mega exercise later this year that is expected to bring together 12 air forces, with the focus being on improving interoperability, imbibing best practices from one another and boosting military cooperation among the participating countries.
The exercise, named Tarang Shakti, will be the biggest multi-nation air exercise to be conducted in the country and will involve fighter jets, military transport aircraft, mid-air refuellers and airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft.
Tarang Shakti is in the planning stage and is likely to be conducted in October-November. Six air forces will participate in the exercise, while the rest will attend the aerial drills as observers. The air forces of the US, the UK, France and Australia are among those likely to take part in the exercise.

India, Tanzania Agree on Five-year Roadmap for Defence Cooperation

India and Tanzania finalised a five-year roadmap to expand overall bilateral defence cooperation including in areas of infrastructure building and collaboration in military equipment and technology.
Both sides agreed on the roadmap at the second edition of India-Tanzania Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting that was held in Arusha, Tanzania.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed a wide range of opportunities for collaboration with a view to enhancing security in the Indian Ocean Region.

DRDO Organises 'Anusandhaan Chintan Shivir' to Encourage Defence R&D

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), organised an 'Anusandhaan Chintan Shivir' with an aim to encourage military R&D within the industry and academia.
The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) also unveiled a comprehensive list of 75 technology priority areas aimed at bolstering the indigenous defence manufacturing sector in India. This strategic move is expected to stimulate innovation, indigenization and self-reliance, placing the country on a trajectory towards enhanced military technology design and development. The unveiling of these priority areas, along with the DRDO Technology Foresight 2023 document, marked a significant milestone in promoting engagement between industry, academia and the defense research establishment.
The DRDO Technology Foresight 2023 document serves as a comprehensive guide, listing various technology areas on which DRDO laboratories are currently working. It not only identifies ongoing technology development activities but also outlines future areas of focus necessary for the development of cutting-edge defence systems and strengthening national security.
