Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja named DGAFMS

Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja was appointed as the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) in August 2026. The DGAFMS is the apex authority responsible for healthcare services and medical policies of the Indian Armed Forces. He will succeed Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin after her retirement. The appointment strengthens leadership in military healthcare management and policy implementation, including medical readiness, preventive care, and crisis response across the three services. Thareja's prior roles in the medical services are expected to shape strategic planning and resource allocation to address evolving medical needs of personnel and veterans. The government highlighted his experience in disaster medical response.

NGOPV Shruti launched at GRSE, Kolkata

India's next-generation offshore patrol vessel (NGOPV), Yard 3037 named Shruti, was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, in August 2026. The vessel is part of the indigenous warship-building programme aimed at enhancing maritime security. The NGOPV project is being developed by GRSE and Goa Shipyard Limited. These vessels will strengthen the Navy’s offshore patrol and surveillance capabilities. IAF-RMAF bilateral drill Udara Shakti 2026 at Subang

Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 was a bilateral air exercise conducted between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) at Subang Air Base, Malaysia. The biennial drill involved aircraft, aircrew and joint operational training to improve interoperability and readiness. The IAF participated as it returns from Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia. The exercise focused on joint training, tactical coordination, air operations, search and rescue, and flight safety procedures. Officials said the drills strengthen defence cooperation between India and Malaysia, support regional stability, and provide practical experience in integrated air operations across varied weather and terrain.

Mecca Joint Defence Agreement Signed in 2026

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement in August 2026. The trilateral pact provides that an armed attack against one member would be treated as an attack against all three. Türkiye's Foreign Minister compared the collective-defence provision to NATO's Article 5. The agreement is intended to strengthen deterrence and defence cooperation amid heightened regional security concerns. It is viewed as a strategic step in diversifying regional security arrangements and aligning with broader Western and Gulf partnerships. BEL and Esri India sign MoU to boost defence geospatial capabilities

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Esri India signed an MoU in August 2026 to strengthen geospatial capabilities for India's defence sector. The partnership focuses on GIS, Location Intelligence and GeoAI-based solutions for defence projects, enabling better mapping, planning and decision support. BEL will contribute its expertise in defence electronics and systems integration, while Esri India's geospatial technology will provide software platforms, data tools and analytics. The collaboration includes indigenous development and training using the Indo ArcGIS platform, enabling soldiers and engineers to access tailored geospatial workflows. The partners aim to accelerate digitisation in procurement, logistics and mission planning while safeguarding sensitive information.

India-US Navy EOD Exercise begins in Kochi on 10 August 2026

The 8th India-US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Exercise began at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi on 10 August 2026. The five-day bilateral exercise runs through 14 August and involves joint training, equipment demonstrations and practical drills by specialist diving and EOD teams. Participants include navies' EOD personnel from both countries, with observers from allied services. The drills focus on mine countermeasures, underwater reconnaissance, explosive disruption and recovery operations in complex harbour and littoral environments. Organisers say the exercise aims to improve interoperability, standard operating procedures, and rapid response capabilities essential for disaster relief and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.

Bhawana Kanth becomes first Indian woman to clear Fighter Combat Leader course

Indian Air Force Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth has become the first Indian woman pilot to clear the Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course. She completed the demanding programme at the TACDE in Gwalior, where selected fighter pilots are trained in advanced air-combat tactics, leadership and mission planning. The achievement marks a milestone for women in India’s combat aviation and signals progress toward gender equality in the armed forces. Kanth’s course included complex live-fly exercises, high-stress decision-making, and coordination with air- and ground-based assets. Her success is likely to inspire future female officers to pursue combat roles and strengthen India’s air-power capabilities.
