Senate Confirms Pam Melroy as NASA Deputy Administrator
The U.S. Senate confirmed former astronaut Pam Melroy as NASA deputy administrator, about six weeks after doing the same for space agency chief Bill Nelson.
Melroy's confirmation was never really in doubt. She received broad bipartisan support during her Senate confirmation hearing last month, and her resume is extremely strong.
Melroy served in the U.S. Air Force before joining NASA. She flew three space shuttle missions, piloting STS-92 in 2000 and STS-112 in 2002 and commanding STS-120 in 2007. She is one of only two women, along with NASA astronaut Eileen Collins, to command a shuttle mission.
After retiring from NASA in 2009, she took several high-profile jobs in the aerospace and defense sectors. She worked at Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), for example, and served as deputy director of the Tactical Technology Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
NASA was established in 1958, succeeding the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).
Since its establishment, most US space exploration efforts have been led by NASA, including the Apollo Moon landing missions, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle.
The first administrator was Dr. T. Keith Glennan, appointed by Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Telangana Government Launches Revv Up for AI Start-ups
As part of the Year of AI 2020 initiative, the Telangana government launched the Telangana Artificial Intelligence Mission (T-AIM) accelerator programme Revv Up, which is exclusively designed for growth-stage artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups.
The vision of T-AIM is to develop Telangana as a global hub for AI start-ups. Revv Up, which will begin its first cohort in July this year, is another step towards making Telangana and Hyderabad a global destination for AI and other emerging technologies.
The Revv Up accelerator will provide the opportunity for start-ups to solve tough business problems in collaboration with the government and industry.

Astronomers Discover Largest-known Spinning Structures in the Universe
According to a new study, tendrils of galaxies up to hundreds of millions of light-years long may be the largest spinning objects in the universe.
Celestial bodies often spin, from planets to stars to galaxies. However, giant clusters of galaxies often spin very slowly, if at all, and so many researchers thought that is where spinning might end on cosmic scales.
But in the new research, researchers found that cosmic filaments, or gigantic tubes made of galaxies, apparently spin. There are structures so vast that entire galaxies are just specks of dust. These huge filaments are much, much bigger than clusters.
China to Launch First Crewed Space Mission in Five Years
China will send three men into orbit in its first crewed mission in nearly five years, part of an ambitious plan to complete a space station by the end of next year.
China is expected to launch the crewed spacecraft Shenzhou-12 on June 17 in Jiuquan in northwestern Gansu province.
The three astronauts are Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo.
Shenzhou-12, meaning "Divine Vessel", will be the third of 11 missions needed to complete China's space station by the end of 2022. China began construction of the station in April with the launch of Tianhe, the first and largest of three modules.

Europe Picks Categories for Three Flagship Space Missions
The European Space Agency (ESA) revealed the three broad science themes it wants to pursue for large-scale missions of €1 billion or more that would launch between 2035 and 2050. They include a close look at icy moons around Jupiter and Saturn, dissecting the atmospheres of nearby exoplanets, and new ways to study the formation of the universe's first stars, galaxies, and black holes.
ESA refreshes its slate of science missions roughly every decade or two. The current program, called Cosmic Vision, has three flagship missions that will launch before 2034: a spacecraft to study Jupiter's moons, an x-ray telescope, and a gravitational wave detector.
