US, Russian Astronauts Blast Off For ISS

  • A US astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts blasted off from Kazakhstan to the International Space Station (ISS) on a Russian-operated flight, in a rare instance of cooperation between Moscow and Washington.
  • Rubio is the first US astronaut to travel to the ISS on a Russian Soyuz rocket since President Vladimir Putin sent troops into pro-Western Ukraine on February 24.
  • Russia's only active female cosmonaut Anna Kikina is expected to travel to the orbital station in early October aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon.

36 OneWeb Satellites Reach at Satish Dhawan Space Centre

  • OneWeb, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications company announced the arrival of 36 satellites at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) ahead of a planned launch from Sriharikota.
  • OneWeb teamed up with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of the national space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to facilitate the launch.
  • With this launch, OneWeb will have over 70 per cent of its planned 'Gen 1 LEO constellation' in orbit as it progresses to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity services around the world.
  • The launch will be the company's 14th overall and the satellites will be put into orbit by the heaviest ISRO rocket, the GSLV-MkIII, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

United Arab Emirates to Launch First Lunar Rover in November

  • The United Arab Emirates will launch its first lunar rover in November, the mission manager said.
  • The "Rashid" rover, named for Dubai's ruling family, would be launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida sometime between Nov. 9 and Nov. 15. The exact date will be announced next month.
  • The rover would be launched aboard a Falcon 9 SpaceX rocket and deposited on the moon by a Japanese ispace lander sometime in March.
  • The lunar mission is part of the UAE's broader strategy to become a major player in the field of space exploration. If the moon mission succeeds, the UAE and Japan would join the ranks of only the U.S., Russia and China as nations that have put a spacecraft on the lunar surface.

China, UAE Join Hands on Moon Rover Missions

  • The China National Space Agency (CNSA) and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) of the United Arab Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future moon missions.
  • The two agencies would collaborate on future moon missions involving the landing of an MBRSC rover aboard a CNSA lander. The agreement marks the first joint space project between the UAE and China.
  • The MBRSC is already working with two private-sector partners on its Emirates Lunar Mission, which is scheduled to send the small Rashid rover to the moon late this year.

Google Acquires Cyber-security Company Mandiant for $5.4 Billion

  • Global technology major Google has announced to complete the $5.4 billion acquisition of cyber-security firm Mandiant. According to Google Cloud chief executive officer (CEO) Thomas Kurian, Mandiant would join Google Cloud to help organisations improve their threat, incident and exposure management.
  • Mandiant is known for unearthing the SolarWinds hack that shook the world. Several big companies, including tech giants like Intel, Cisco, VMware and Nvidia, suffered part of the SolarWinds hack allegedly orchestrated by Russia-backed cybercriminals.
