The Golden Cat Wears New Colours

Scientists have discovered that golden is no longer the only colour the elusive Asiatic golden cat can be associated with. Its coat comes in five other shades in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Asiatic golden cat (Catopuma temminckii) is listed as near threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of threatened species.
It is found across eastern Nepal through north-eastern India to Indonesia.
Indian scientists from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), an international conservation charity, and University College London (UCL) have discovered six colour morphs of the golden cat in Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh.
The findings have contributed to an evolutionary puzzle because no other place on earth has so many colours of wild cats of the same species.

CPCB Orders to Shut Export Units

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) ordered closure of nine major export and dyeing units in Panipat for flouting environmental norms.
The units are Pan Overseas, Textile World, Shiva Furnishing, Aggarwal Processors, Great Eastern, Shree Balaji Woolen, Raj Overseas, Pan Foods, and Hand Fab Living.

SDMC Goes for Green Flexes

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) started using green or biodegradable flexes on its unipole advertisements because of the environmental harm caused by plastic flexes.
Flexes refer to vinyl sheets printed in colour so they are flexible, which makes them ideal for banners. These banners are usually made of poly-vinyl chloride (PVC), a synthetic material that does not degenerate.
As a result, they can only be dumped in landfills or burnt after they are scrapped. In garbage dumps, such flexes do not degrade for thousands of years and when burnt, release toxic fumes that have serious implications on public health.

Canada to Ban Single-use Plastics

Canada would ban single-use plastics from 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced, declaring it a "global challenge" to phase out the plastic bags, straws and cutlery.

Mumbai Sizzles on Hottest June Day

Mumbai recorded maximum temperature of 36.6 degrees Celsius, the highest June temperature since 2015. The temperature was three degrees above normal.
Minimum temperature, meanwhile, was normal at 28.8 degrees Celsius. By evening, the sky had become overcast.
Monsoon has hit Kerala and is expected to reach Mumbai soon.

India Backs Dhanauri for International Wetland Tag

The National Capital Region (NCR) may get a second wetland of international importance in Dhanauri, Greater Noida, if India's proposal to declare the 100-hectare wetland a Ramsar site of international importance gets accepted.
If accepted by the Ramsar Convention, which is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources, Dhanauri will get legal protection from land use change.
There are nine criteria for being accepted as a Ramsar site, including that the site should support vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered species or threatened ecological communities.
A wetland can also be considered for the tag if it regularly supports 1% individuals of a species or subspecies of water birds.

Steps to Turn Golden Temple Complex Green

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages the historic Sikh shrines, has taken some initiatives to increase green cover in the Golden Temple complex which is frequented by lakhs of devotees and tourists daily.
Just inside the entrance from the Brahm Buta bazaar side, a 'vertical garden' comprising 24,000 plants of different varieties has been developed with the flower pots fixed to the walls.
After the Akal Purakh Ki Fauj and other Sikh bodies started plantation on the rooftops of some buildings, the SGPC kicked off a similar drive on the rooftop of Teja Samundri Hall, its administrative building, to create a green cover in and around the complex.
As part of the plan, the rooftops will be turned into terrace gardens.
