Britain, Ireland hit as Storm Ciara whips over northwest Europe

Britain and Ireland were lashed by howling winds and inundated with driving rain on Sunday as Storm Ciara left homes without power, wiped out sports events and disrupted travel around northern Europe.
The bad weather also hit France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany throughout Sunday, causing scores of flights to be cancelled.
In Britain, more than 30,000 homes were left without power, largely in eastern England.
The highest wind speed recorded was 150kmh at Aberdaron, on the tip of northwest Wales's Llyn peninsula.

Cauvery delta to be declared a protected agriculture zone

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday announced that the Cauvery delta region would be declared a Protected Special Agriculture Zone as a step towards ensuring food security of the State.
The announcement was widely hailed by political parties and farmers' organisations, while the DMK termed it a "diversionary tactic".
The State government would never give its approval for projects such as hydrocarbon exploration in the delta region.

Antarctica Sets Record High Temperature

Antarctica, the coldest, windiest and driest continent on Earth, set a record high temperature, underscoring the global warming trend.
Esperanza, Argentina's research station on the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, reached 64.9 degrees Fahrenheit, or 18.2 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 63.5 degrees set on March 24, 2015. The station has been recording temperatures since 1961.

Campaign to Save Gloucestershire Roman Villa Unearthed

A campaign has been launched to protect the remains of a Roman villa unearthed during work on a new housing estate.
The villa was discovered in Cam, Gloucestershire, by archaeologists working on behalf of Bovis Homes.
BBC TV presenter and archaeology expert Professor Mark Horton are among those calling for it to be saved, describing it as "a very important discovery".
But the developer says archaeologists have told them the villa does not qualify for preservation.

World's Biggest Iceberg Makes a Run for it

The world's biggest iceberg is about to enter the open ocean.
A68, a colossus that broke free from the Antarctic in 2017, has pushed so far north it is now at the limit of the continent's perennial sea-ice.
When it calved, the berg had an area close to 6,000 sq km (2,300 sq mi) and has lost very little of its bulk over the past two and a half years.
But scientists say A68 will struggle to maintain its integrity when it reaches the Southern Ocean's rougher waters.

US, EU, India among Big Emitters

The UN chief has said that the European Union, the US, China, India, Japan and Russia are the world's "big emitters" who must respect and meet their commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, underlining that their failure to do so will undermine global climate action efforts.

Britain to Ban Sale of New Gas, Diesel and Hybrid Cars

The government announced that Britain will ban the sale of new gas, diesel and hybrid vehicles from 2035, five years earlier than planned, in an attempt to reduce air pollution and fossil fuel emissions.
Britain's step amounts to a victory for electric cars that if copied globally could hit the wealth of oil producers, as well as transform the car industry.
The U.K. isn't alone in its efforts. More than a dozen countries around the world have announced plans to crack down on new sales of gas and diesel vehicles in the next decade or two. France plans to ban the sale of fossil fuel-powered cars by 2040 and Norway's Parliament has set a non-binding goal that by 2025 all cars should be zero emissions.
