IIT Roorkee Wins National Award for Outstanding Research on Citizen-centric Services

IIT Roorkee researchers led by Prof. Dharmendra Singh won the national award called the National Gold Award for e-governance for 'Outstanding Research on Citizen-Centric Services by Academic/Research Institutions'. The Covid-19 period spurred various institutes around the world to come up with many different kinds of solutions for various problems being faced by common people.
The IIT Roorkee team won the award for the development of e-waste-based microwave absorbing material for electromagnetic shielding and stealth applications.
This development has applications in both civilian and military domains.

BHU Introduces India's First-ever Programme in Hindu Studies

The prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi has started a new postgraduate course - masters in Hindu Studies. The introduction of this new course makes BHU, the first university in India to offer a course in this discipline.
According to a BHU spokesperson, the postgraduate course is the first-of-its-kind to be offered by a university in the country.
Masters in Hindu studies is an interdisciplinary programme, which is designed in line with the National Education Policy, 2020.
The programme will be offered by the Bharat Adhyayan Kendra, in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy and Religion, Department of Sanskrit and Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, under the faculty of Arts.

Telangana Set to Push English Medium Learning in Govt .Schools

The Telangana state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) decided to bring legislation to introduce English medium in government schools from the next academic session in the state. It also decided to regulate fees in private educational institutions.
The cabinet felt that there was an increase in demand for the English medium education or English as the medium of instruction in the government schools and that parents in rural areas were ready to send their children to the government schools if were taught in English.

CBSE to Organise Science Challenge for Students of Classes 8 to 10

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a Science challenge for the students of classes 8 to 10. The board is conducting this challenge "as an initiative to generate curiosity, enquiry and higher order thinking amongst the learners" in an age where science and technology are vital factors to understand the world.
The 'CBSE Science Challenge' will be available on the DIKSHA platform from January 17 to February 28, 2022. The challenge will be available in both Hindi and English and can be taken up by students across boards, with no participation fee.

Kumbalangi in Kerala First Sanitary Napkin Free Village in India

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan declared a small village, Kumbalangi, in Ernakulam district, Kerala as the first napkin-free village in the country.
More than 5,000 menstrual cups were distributed among girls and women and they have been given training by volunteers for three months about their use and advantages.
Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden initiated the "Avalkayi" campaign under the Pradan Mantri Sansad Adarsh Gram Yogana.
The project was implemented as part of 'Avalkayi' (for her) scheme implemented in the Ernakulam parliamentary constituency. The other partners in the scheme are HLL Management Academy through their 'Thingal' scheme and Indian Oil Corporation.

IIT-Kanpur Launches Departments of Design, Space Science and Astronomy

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur approved setting up two new departments in the fields of Design, Space Science and Astronomy, making the total tally to 20 academic departments.
The institute's design programme that has been in existence since 2002 will be transformed into the Department of Design. The institute is also planning to launch a Bachelor of Design programme starting as early as 2023.
The Design Department will be headed by Professor Nachiketa Tiwari, the current Head of the Design Programme.

The Citizen Constitution Literacy Campaign

The Citizen Constitution Literacy Campaign campaign was launched in Kollam district of Kerala. The campaign is first of its kind. The campaign would educate the residents of the district about the basics of constitution. The campaign aims to make Kollam district a constitutionally literate district.
The campaign aims to educate seven lakh Kollam residents. It is organized by the Kerala Institute of Local Administration and District Planning Committee. The campaign would brief the preamble of the Indian Constitution, fundamental rights, history of Indian constitution and legal remedies. All the citizens above the age of ten are to be briefed about the constitution. This includes socio – cultural organizations, private establishments, government institutions, educational institutions.
