India to Set up its First IIT Outside the Country in UAE

  • The Indian Institute of Technology will establish its first branch outside India in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as part of the India-UAE trade deal signed. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed between the UAE and India will usher in a new phase of joint strategic cooperation in all sectors. The two nations will also set up an India-UAE cultural council to facilitate and promote cultural projects, cross-cultural exchanges and exhibitions.
  • The two countries realising the need to establish world-class institutions that encourage and support innovation and technological progress, the leaders agreed to establish an Indian Institute of Technology in the United Arab Emirates.
  • The agreement was signed after a virtual summit held with an agenda to boost trade and investments between both countries and usher in a new era of economic progress. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have participated in the summit.

IGNOU PG Diploma in Sindhi-Hindi-Sindhi Translation Launched

  • IGNOU launched a new post-graduate diploma programme in Sindhi-Hindi-Sindhi Translation. The School of Translation Studies and Training (SOTST) started a Postgraduate Diploma in Sindhi-Hindi-Sindhi Translation (PGDSHST). The announcement of this programme was made on the occasion of International Mother Language Day.
  • The PG Diploma in Sindhi-Hindi-Sindhi Translation programme was launched by Professor Nageswara Rao, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU.

University of Essex Launches Scholarships worth £5,000 for Indian Students

  • University of Essex, United Kingdom (UK) launched a scholarship for Indian students looking to pursue a master's degree in the UK. The university will now offer various scholarships to Indian students under the Academic Excellence International Masters Scholarship programme.
  • The scholarship is available for the University of Essex's September 2022 and January 2023 intakes, and will offer support worth up to £5,000 for Indian students.
  • For these scholarships, eligible courses are those which are full-time taught masters courses leading to MA, MSc, LLM and MRes degrees. These will be awarded to students who have completed relevant school or university studies in one of the specified countries, and in the case of the UK, who are domiciled in one of the other specified countries.

Government Approves NMMSS Extension

  • The Central Sector National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) was approved for continuation for a period of five years that is from the year 2021-22 to the year 2025-26. The extension would be done over the 15th Finance Commission cycle.
  • Since the scheme's inception in 2008-09, 22.06 lakh scholarships have been awarded, at a total cost of Rs. 1783.03 crore.
  • Among the changes, the income ceiling was increased from Rs.1.5 lakh per annum to Rs.3.5 lakh per annum. The renewal criteria under the scheme were also revised.
  • The scheme's objective is to award students of economically weaker sections who are meritorious to stop their drop-out rates at the eighth grade to encourage them to continue their education at a secondary stage.

IIT Madras and NIOT Bring OCEANS Conference

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras and National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, organized the OCEANS 2022 Conference and Exposition, the Bi-annual event for Global Marine Researchers, technologists and engineers, students, and policymakers, from February 21-24, 2022.
  • This conference was organized in India for the first time and wasg coordinated by the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras. They organized the event on behalf of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Ocean Engineering Society (IEEE OES) and Marine Technology Society (MTS). The Conference is being held in Hybrid Mode.

UGC Reforms: Ed-tech Firms can Tie-Up with Universities to Develop E-courses

  • ED-TECH companies will soon be allowed to "collaborate" with higher education institutes offering online undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to help develop course content and carry out evaluation of students under a set of sweeping reforms planned by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  • UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said that the proposed amendments are aimed at encouraging greater flexibility for colleges and universities and harnessing the technological tools available with the fast growing ed-tech sector.
  • Through amendments in the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, universities and colleges offering online UG and PG programmes will be allowed to collaborate with ed-tech platforms towards developing course content and Financial Rules.
  • The amended draft regulations are likely to be put out in public domain for suggestions and feedback in the first week of March.

Six African countries to Receive Revolutionary mRNA Technology to Set up Vaccine Production Centr...

  • The World Health Organization has announced that six African countries will be given the revolutionary mRNA technology to set up their own vaccine production centres helping the continent acquire self-reliance against the Covid pandemic.
  • Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia will get the technology used in the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna jabs developed in Europe.
  • The Senegalese president said the aim was to have 60% of vaccines administered in Africa produced in Africa as well.
  • In the future, the new African vaccine hub might also produce jabs for diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. A ceremony marking the mRNA technology transfer will be held later in Brussels at a summit between the European Union and the African Union.
