Now, Students can Opt for Two Degree Courses at Same Time

  • Students can now pursue two full-time degree programmes simultaneously at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, either in physical or online mode or in combination.
  • The UGC approved simultaneous dual degree courses for students in India, allowing them to complete courses either at the same university or from different universities at the same time, University Grants Commission Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar said, adding that the UGC would soon issue detailed guidelines in this regard.
  • Two full-time programmes can be taken up in physical mode provided class timings do not overlap. For example, a student can pursue BCom classes in the morning and BA classes in the evening.

SC Asks FTII to Allow Candidates with Colour Blindness to Pursue Filmmaking

  • The Supreme Court directed the Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) to allow candidates suffering from colour blindness to pursue all courses on filmmaking and editing, saying there was a need to adopt a more inclusive and progressive approach to the matter.
  • It said no discrimination be made based on colour blindness for getting admission in the institute as it is not a form of blindness but a deficiency.
  • The authorities cited FTII rules which state that colour blind candidates are not fit for admission in a few courses, including film editing. Kumar had moved the high court in 2016 against rejection of admission but failed to get a reprieve.

  • This convention is an opportunity to review the path trodden so far, achievements in the field of Homoeopathy and to formulate future strategies for development of Homoeopathy. There is an imminent need to initiate a dialogue among the major stakeholders of Homoeopathy to address much needed practice standards in clinical research informatics, data standards in clinical research, policy issues, educational standards, and instructional resources.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Passes Resolution Urging Centre to Withdraw CUET

  • The Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a resolution urging the Centre to withdraw the proposal to conduct Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to courses offered by central varsities. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin moved the resolution, urging the Central government to withdraw the entrance test.
  • There is no doubt that this CUET, like NEET will sideline the diverse school education system across the country, grossly undermine the relevance of overall development-oriented long-form learning in schools and make students rely upon coaching centres for improving their entrance examination scores.

Cadila Pharma Launches World's First Novel 3-dose Vaccine against Rabies

  • Pharmaceutical major Cadila Pharmaceuticals announced that it has developed the world's first novel three-dose vaccine against rabies. The three-dose vaccine, named as 'ThRabis', is a recombinant nano-particle based G protein vaccine which is prepared using Virus-like Particle technology, the company said in a release, adding that the three-dose schedule is spread over only one week.
  • The new vaccine would prove to be a game-changer because all the existing rabies vaccines require five injections, spread over 28 days for eliminating the threat (of virus spread), Cadila Pharmaceuticals CMD Rajiv Modi said at the launch ceremony of the new vaccine.
  • Animal bite victims could not complete the full course of the vaccine due to the long and complicated dosing schedule. This leaves many victims unprotected and susceptible to developing rabies, which is a fatal condition. With this new three-dose vaccine, many more lives can be saved.

Eminent Scholar-academician Manoj Soni New UPSC Chairman

  • Dr. Manoj Soni, a monk associated with the Anoopam Mission of the Swaminarayan sect, was appointed the Chairman of the country's premier government recruiting agency, i.e., the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • Dr. Soni was appointed to replace the previous UPSC chairman Pradip Kumar Joshi. Prior to this assignment, Soni has also served as the vice-chancellor of two universities, and has earned several national and international awards and recognitions.

UGC Gives Approval for Establishment of Bhima Bhoi Chair at DU, GGV

  • The Bhima Bhoi Chair at Delhi University and Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, have been authorised by the University Grants Commission.
  • In separate letters to the two central institutions, the UGC stated that the universities may create the Chair by filling existing vacant positions, and that other recurrent expenses could be charged to monies already allocated to them.

Tata Memorial Centre Inks MoU to Improve Cancer Care in Indonesia

  • The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) signed a Partnership Agreement of Cancer Patient Navigation Programme to improve cancer care in Indonesia, marking the World Health Day.
  • The MoU was inked with Dharmais National Cancer Hospital and PT Roche Indonesia, in a virtual ceremony.
  • Patient Navigation' refers to individualised assistance offered to patients, families and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers.

'One Health' Pilot Project Launched by Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying

  • The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Government of India launched a pilot project in the state of Uttarakhand to implement the One Health Framework by One Health Support Unit. The key objective of the Unit is to develop a national One Health roadmap based on the learnings of the pilot project implementation. The 'One Health India' program initiated by the Department will work with stakeholders from various sectors to improve livestock health, human health, wildlife health, and environmental health through technology and finance
  • The pilot in Uttarakhand will support the creation of the One Health Framework for India and help build strong social infrastructure that supports the health of the people and the planet.
  • Based on the recommendations of Project Steering Committee (PSC), State and district level one health committees need to be constituted by involving competent authorities from health, animal husbandry and environment ministries.

Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Government to Start Basic Online Course in MSME

  • To inculcate and encourage business development skills in youth, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will soon start an online course in entrepreneurship. The course will be conducted at college level and will fetch a certificate for the participants on completion. The certification will be given by the MSME and export promotion departments.
  • The course will have general certifications besides advance courses in specific areas like food processing, agricultural production, organic farming and mechanical work in subsequent stages.
  • The department has also envisaged the idea of introducing entrepreneurial skills at the senior secondary level so that the foundation of their self-reliance is laid in the formative years.
