Science and Technology Ministry Withdraws Support from Kalinga Prize

  • The Science and Technology Ministry withdrew its contribution to the prestigious UNESCO Kalinga Prize for Popularisation of Science, UNESCO's oldest award, instituted through a donation by Odisha's former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik way back in 1951. The decision to withdraw the Department of Science and Technology's annual contribution to the award was part of the decision to 'rationalise' all science awards. The government has instituted a new set of science awards, called Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, to replace all the earlier awards, including the coveted Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards. The inaugural set of Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskars were announced in the first week of August.
  • Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, however, has protested the government's decision and written to Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh to ensure that the support is restored.

Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2024 Announced

  • In a significant move to recognise and honour outstanding contributions to science, technology, and innovation, the Indian government announced the inaugural Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskars. This new award system, replacing over 300 previous awards from various science departments, aims to celebrate the achievements of academics, technologists, and inventors across the country.
  • The government announced a total of 33 Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskars across various categories:
  • Thirteen scientists received the Vigyan Shri award for their distinguished contributions across different scientific domains.
  • Eighteen young scientists under the age of 45 were honoured with the Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards, continuing the legacy of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize.
  • The Team Chandrayaan-3 was recognized with the Vigyan Team award for their exceptional contribution to India's space program, particularly for the successful moon landing mission.
  • This new award system represents a significant consolidation of India's science honours. It replaces the previous system, which included the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, instituted in 1958 and named after the renowned chemist who was the first chairman of the University Grants Commission and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2024 Announced

  • In a significant move to recognise and honour outstanding contributions to science, technology, and innovation, the Indian government announced the inaugural Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskars. This new award system, replacing over 300 previous awards from various science departments, aims to celebrate the achievements of academics, technologists, and inventors across the country.
  • The highest honour, the Vigyan Ratna Puraskar, was awarded to Dr. Govindarajan Padmanabhan, a celebrated biochemist and former director of the Indian Institute of Science-Bengaluru. Dr. Padmanabhan, also a Padma Bhushan laureate, receives this lifetime achievement award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of biochemistry.

President Droupadi Murmu Conferred 'Companion of the Order of Fiji' in Capital Suva
