International Migrants Day

  • International Migrants' Day is annually marked on December 18.
  • International Migrants Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000, in response to the growing number of migrants across the world, in addition to, marking the establishment of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, adopted by the United Nations in 1990, that came into force in 2003.
  • The theme for International Migrants Day 2024 is 'Honouring the contributions of migrants and respecting their rights.'

Minorities Rights Day in India

  • Minorities Rights Day in India is observed on December 18. The day is observed in India, every year to safeguard the constitutionally guaranteed rights of religious minorities in the country.
  • The establishment of Minorities Rights Day coincides with the adoption of the UN Declaration on December 18, 1992. This declaration emphasised the right of persons belonging to minorities to enjoy their own culture, practice their religion and use their language without discrimination.
  • In response to this, India took a significant step by creating the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) under the National Commission for Minorities Act (1992). This commission is tasked with safeguarding and promoting the rights of minority communities in the country.

Pensioners Day in India

  • Pensioners Day, observed annually on December 17 in India, is a tribute to D. S. Nakara, the pioneer who fought relentlessly for the rights and dignity of pensioners. This day commemorates the landmark Supreme Court judgment of 1982, which guaranteed equality and justice for retired officials and pensioners.
  • The liberal pension system introduced in 1979 benefited only those who retired after March 31, 1979.
  • D.S. Nakara challenged this discriminatory policy in court, arguing that it was a violation of equality.

General Jagjit Singh Aurora. This victory reshaped South Asia's geopolitics, showcasing India's commitment to justice, humanity, and democratic values.

National Energy Conservation Day

  • National Energy Conservation Day was initiated in 1991 by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. BEE plays a crucial role in implementing policies and promoting energy efficiency and conservation programs across the country.
  • Since its inception, the day has been celebrated to spread awareness about energy conservation techniques, the need for energy efficiency, and the impact of excessive energy consumption on the environment.
  • The theme for National Energy Conservation Day 2024 is 'Powering Sustainability: Every Watt Counts.' This theme emphasises the critical role of small, collective efforts in energy conservation.

International Day of Neutrality

  • International Day of Neutrality is observed on December 12 each year. This date was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Neutrality by Turkmenistan in 1995, recognising the country's status as a permanently neutral state.
  • The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Neutrality on February 2, 2017, through a resolution. This observance aims to promote the principles of neutrality, encourage peaceful resolutions to conflicts, and celebrate countries that have declared their permanent neutrality.

Universal Health Coverage Day

  • Universal Health Coverage Day celebrated annually on December 12 aims to raise awareness of the need for strong and resilient health systems and universal health coverage (UHC) with multi-stakeholder partners.
  • On December 12, 2012, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) endorsed a resolution urging countries to accelerate progress towards UHC – the idea that everyone, everywhere should have access to quality, affordable health care – as an essential priority for international development. On December 12, 2017, the UN proclaimed December 12 as Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day), by resolution 72/138.
  • The theme of UHC Day 2024 is 'Health: It's on the Government!' This theme pinpoints the fact that it is about time that governments develop policies and systems that ensure accessibility, affordability and equity in healthcare access.
