International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

  • February 6 marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
  • In 1997, World Health organisation with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) gave a joint statement against female genital mutilation. The Unified Nations General Assembly in 2012 adopted the goal to end the female genital mutilation.
  • Since then every year, February 6 is observed as International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation to raise awareness about the issues faced by women because of this system and steps we can take in wiping out this merciless practice.
  • The theme for this year (2025 is 'Stepping Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation.'

National Day of Sri Lanka

  • Every year, February 4 is celebrated as National Day in Sri Lanka. Also called Independence Day, the day commemorates the country's political independence from the yokes of British rule on February 4, 1948.
  • On February 4, 1948, British Ceylon gained independence and became Ceylon. It existed as a dominion within the British Empire, and its first Prime Minister was Don Stephen Senanayake. In 1972, the name of the country was changed to Sri Lanka and it became a republic within the Commonwealth.

World Cancer Day

  • World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4 to raise awareness and educate people about the prevention, identification, and treatment of this life-threatening disease.
  • World Cancer Day was initially announced on February 4, 1999, during the World Summit Against Cancer in Paris. The next year, on February 4, 2000, the Charter of Paris Against Cancer was signed during the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium, officially creating World Cancer Day. This charter emphasises the need for global collaboration in the battle against cancer and addresses critical problems such as cancer care, research, and treatment breakthroughs.
  • The theme for World Cancer Day 2025, 'United by Unique', emphasises the importance of personalized, patient-centered care in the fight against cancer.

International Development Week 2025

  • In 2025, the International Development Week is being observed from February 2 to 8 as per the official website.
  • The Canadian International Development Agency launched Development Day in October 1988. This was a section of the global peace-promoting Education to Development Programme. To commemorate International Development Week, Global Affairs Canada took up the custom and worked with Canadian NGOs.
  • The beginning of this distinctive custom dates back to 1991. International Development Week has been celebrated annually throughout the first full week of February ever since.
  • The theme for this year (2025) is 'Building a Better World Together'.

World Rheumatic Arthritis Day

  • Every year, World Rheumatic Arthritis Day is celebrated on February 2 to bring issues to light of rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory illness that influences the joints. This is an autoimmune illness wherein the body attacks and harms the lining of the joints, confusing it with foreign material.
  • Alfred B. Garrod started calling the disease "Rheumatoid Arthritis" in 1858. It was earlier confused with Osteoarthritis. Garrod corrected the name and gave a distinction between both.
  • In 2011, patients came together and formed the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation. The purpose of the organization is to spread awareness about the condition and the treatment options available. In 2013, the foundation started Rheumatoid Awareness Day to raise awareness and resolve misconceptions about the disease.

World Wetlands Day

  • World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually on February 2 to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands and promote conservation efforts globally. This day marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, an international treaty focused on the protection and sustainable use of wetlands. Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change.
  • Each year, World Wetlands Day has a specific theme that focuses on a critical issue related to wetlands. The theme for World Wetlands Day 2025 is "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future." It highlights the need for conservation efforts to safeguard ecosystems for future generations.

Indian Coast Guard Day

  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrate its 49th Raising Day on February 1, 2025, commemorating nearly five decades of dedicated service in securing India's vast maritime boundaries.
  • Since its establishment in 1977 with just seven surface platforms, the ICG has grown into a formidable force, now operating 151 ships and 76 aircraft. By 2030, the ICG plans to expand further, targeting 200 surface platforms and 100 aircraft, solidifying its role as one of the world's leading Coast Guard services.
  • The ICG operates under the motto "Vayam Rakshamah" (We Protect), which highlights its mission of safeguarding India's maritime zones.
