The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of the Tropics in June 2016, through resolution A/RES/70/267. The date of June 29 was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the first 'State of the Tropics Report,' launched in 2014 by Myanmar's Nobel Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi.
