Central Excise Day

  • Central Excise Day is observed on February 24 and it commemorates the Central Excise and Salt Act which was enacted on February 24, 1944. The annual event highlights the essential role played by the Central Excise Department in the industrial development of the country.
  • Central Excise Day honours the contribution of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to the country, the officers associated with it and their services. The day also encourages CBIC employees to carry out their duties with utmost sincerity as they have the responsibility of checking the corruption of goods from the manufacturing sector.

25th Meeting of Financial Stability and Development Council

  • The Financial Stability and Development Council's (FSDC) 25th meeting was held in Mumbai. This meeting was held under the chair of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • The council discussed the different mandates of the FSDC as well as important macro-financial concerns that have arisen as a result of certain domestic and global developments.
  • The council also stated that government, as well as other authorities, must keep a close watch on the financial operations and conditions of major financial institutions since this could expose financial vulnerabilities in the long and medium-term.
  • The council also talked about the steps that need to be taken to further expand the financial sector and ensure economic growth while maintaining macroeconomic stability.
  • The council also talked about currency management operational issues as well as noted the activities of the FSDC Sub-Committee, which is chaired by the RBI Governor, as well as the actions taken in response to previous FSDC judgments.
  • The government had set up the Financial Stability and Development Council in association with financial market regulators. This was done to institutionalize and strengthen the system for maintaining financial stability, improve inter-regulatory coordination, and promote financial sector development.

World Peace and Understanding Day

  • Celebrated on February 23, World Peace and Understanding Day is Rotary Club's birthday as well. With the motto to spread peace, the day is celebrated to remember that it is our world, and we collectively can make it a peaceful place to live. The name of the day signifies making a common ground for the people of the world to live with and have an understanding of love and respect for each other to build better human connections. It is focused on achieving goodwill, peace, and understanding among all people of the world.
  • World Peace and Understanding Day has a motto that stands for "Service above Self". The day is celebrated across the world with the thought of understanding amongst people and sharing life values to maintain peace and harmony.

World Thinking Day

  • World Thinking Day is celebrated on February 22 worldwide. It started in 1926 and has been celebrated by the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 150 countries every year.
  • The day is an opportunity to speak for the rights and needs of young women. It is also a way to raise funds to help the needy and deserving women. The day is celebrated by millions of young girls.
  • Back in 1926 at the fourth Girl Scout international conference, it was discussed that there is a need for a day where the girl scout can spread awareness worldwide for girl guides and girl scouts. Also, to appreciate and thank the other girl guides and girl scouts 'sisters'.
  • The theme of the day is decided by the team of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. The theme for World Thinking Day 2022 was "Our World: Our Equal Future: The Environment and Gender Equality."

World Scout Day

  • World Scout Day is celebrated on February 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scouts movement. Also known as Founder's Day, the day also marks the birth anniversary of his wife Olave Baden-Powell, who was also the World Chief Guide.
  • Baden-Powell established the Boy Scout movement in 1907. It has grown from a small group of boys in the United Kingdom to 57 million members in 172 countries. World Thinking Day is also celebrated on this date, and aims to raise funds for Girl Scout and Girl Guide organisations.

World Day of Social Justice

  • World Day of Social Justice is observed on February 20 each year, as declared by the United Nations. The UN reviewed the Declaration of Copenhagen and Programme of Action for Social Development on November 26, 2007, and later declared that right from the 63rd session of the General Assembly, February 20 will be observed as the World Day of Social Justice.
  • The theme for World Justice Day 2022 is 'Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment'. Around 60 per cent of the world's employed population, which include men, women and youth earn their livelihoods in the informal economy. These people often lack social protection and employee-related benefits.

'Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate'

  • Government's various science and technology organisations are celebrating Science and Technology achievements over the past 75 years as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • A week-long commemoration titled Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate is being held from 22nd to 28th February in 75 locations across the country.
  • A Science and Technology mega expo, and National Science Book Fair are being held in New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
  • The programme has been designed to inspire India's youth and help them navigate into building a progressive nation. 

International Mother Language Day

  • February 21 is celebrated as International Mother Language Day.
  • The day is dedicated to promote awareness of linguistic diversity and cultural unity. It also promotes multilingualism. The United Nations recognised this day in 2002, three years after it was first announced on 17 November 1999 by UNESCO.
  • It was the initiative of Bangladesh with the broader idea of preserving and protecting all the languages used by the people. It is said that out of 7000 languages spoken in the world, 2000 are spoken in India itself.
  • "Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities," is the theme of the International Mother Language Day 2022.

European Union-African Union Summit

  • The Sixth European Union-African Union Summit was held from 17th to 18th February 2022. This summit took place in Brussels, Belgium.
  • The event was scheduled for October 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed. The summit was co-chaired by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Macky Sall, President of Senegal, who was also the Chairperson of the African Union at the time.
  • Representatives from the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU), as well as their member states, attended the event. Despite being Africa's leading trade partner, the European Union is not seen as a major partner by African countries. This is according to a study which was done by the European Commission, with the United States and China ranking higher.

World Day of Social Justice

  • World Day of Social Justice is observed on February 20 every year. The main objective of celebrating World Day of Social Justice is to raise a voice against social injustice and to bring the various communities internationally together to eliminate poverty, gender, and physical discrimination, illiteracy, religious discrimination to make a socially integrated society.
  • On 26 November 2007, the General Assembly declared that starting from the sixty-third session of the General Assembly, February 20 will be celebrated annually as the World Day of Social Justice.
  • The theme for World Day of Social Justice 2022 was "Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment".
