RBI appoints Manoranjan Mishra as Executive Director effective from Nov 1

- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday announced the appointment of Manoranjan Mishra as Executive Director (ED) with effect from November 1, 2023.
- As the ED he will be looking after the Enforcement Directorate, Risk Monitoring Department and Department of External Investments & Operations.
- Before taking charge as the Executive Director, he was the Chief General Manager in the Department of Regulation of RBI. He has over three decades of experience in RBI after working across departments including regulations of banking and NBFC, supervision of banks and currency management. He has served as a member in several Working Groups at the national and international levels contributing to formulation of regulatory/ supervisory policies.

Justice Rajendra Menon re-appointed as Chairman of Armed Forces Tribunal

Justice Menon will serve as Chairman of the Tribunal till he attains the age of 70 years on June 6, 2027.
Former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajendra Menon has been re-appointed as Chairman of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) for four years.
The former judge was first recommended to the post in 2019 and served for four years.
Justice Menon was elevated as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on April 1, 2002.
Zydus acquires UK's LiqMeds Grp for 68m
Homegrown pharma major Zydus Lifesciences Limited on Tuesday announced it has acquired UK-based LiqMeds Group of companies. The acquisition has been made through Zydus' wholly-owned subsidiary, Zydus Pharmaceuticals UK Limited, the company said in its stock exchange filing. LiqMeds has capabilities and specialisation in development, manufacturing and supply of oral liquid products for global markets, which it currently commercialises through its partners.

Air Marshal P. K. Barbora, Former IAF Vice-chief Passes Away

Former IAF vice-chief, Air Marshal P.K. Barbora (Retd), known for calling a spade a spade, passed away at the Army Research and Referral Hospital.
Air Marshal Barbora (Retd) is regarded within the Indian Air Force (IAF) as the force behind the reactivation of the Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) airstrip in 2008, after over four decades of closure, at a time when the government and the IAF itself were sceptical.
Barbora was heading the Western Air Command (WAC) at the time. DBO, the highest airfield in the world, is an Advanced Landing Ground close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, east of Siachen. He had also activated the Fuk Che Advanced Landing Ground.
Born in Shillong, Air Marshal Barbora was the first officer from the Northeast to reach such a high post in the armed forces.

State Bank of India Ropes in MS Dhoni as Brand Ambassador

The country's largest lender, State Bank of India, roped in cricketing legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the bank's official brand ambassador to strengthen its connection, especially with the younger population.
Dhoni will play a pivotal role in various marketing and promotional campaigns of SBI.
His remarkable capacity to maintain composure in stressful situations and his renowned ability for clear thinking and rapid decision-making under duress makes him the ideal choice that resonates with SBI, to connect with its customers and stakeholders across the country.
Among public sector banks, Bank of Baroda had appointed Rahul Dravid as its brand ambassador. At present, badminton players P. V. Sindhu, K. Srikanth, and cricketer Shafali Verma are BOB's brand ambassadors. Delhi-based Punjab National Bank had also taken Virat Kohli on board as its brand ambassador.

Baijnath Aggarwal, Trustee of Geeta Press Gorakhpur, Passes Away

Gita Press trustee Baijnath Agarwal passed away at the age of 90 at his residence in Gorakhpur's Hariom Nagar.
For the past 40 years, Baijnath dedicated his life to social awareness and humanitarian causes as a trustee of Gita Press.
In 1950, Baijnath Agarwal joined Gita Press as an employee at the age of 17. He became a trustee of Gita Press in 1983. Prior to this position, he had also held the role of an administrator at Gita Press. His father also worked as an employee there.
In 2023, the Centre had conferred the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2021 on Gita Press, Gorakhpur.
Established in 1923, Gita Press is one of the world's largest publishers, having published 41.7 crore books in 14 languages, including 16.21 crore Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.

Former Union and State Minister Babanrao Dhakne Passes Away

Former Union and State Minister Babanrao Dhakne died at the age of 86.
He was considered a prominent leader of the Vanjari Community of Maharashtra.
He was the Minister of State for Energy in the government of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, and had also handled several key ministries in Maharashtra besides serving as Leader of Opposition and Deputy Speaker of Assembly.
He was associated with several parties like Congress, Janata Party, Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party and enjoyed close rapport with former PMs like Indira Gandhi, V. P. Singh and other bigwigs in the Centre and state politics.

China ex-Premier Li Keqiang Passes Away

China's former Premier Li Keqiang died, after retiring from a decade in office during which his reformist star had dimmed. He was 68.
Once viewed as a top Communist Party leadership contender, Li was sidelined in recent years by President Xi Jinping, who tightened his grip on power and steered the world's second-largest economy in a more statist direction.
Li was premier and head of China's cabinet under Xi for a decade until stepping down from all political positions in March 2023.
