Football: Brazilian World Cup Winner Mario Zagallo Passes Away

  • Mário Zagallo, who won two World Cups as a player, one as a coach and another as an assistant coach for Brazil, died. He was 92.
  • The first person to win the World Cup both as a player and a manager, Zagallo is for many Brazilian football fans synonymous with patriotism, grit and glory.
  • He was Brazil's forward when they won the World Cup in 1958 in Sweden and 1962 in Chile, and one of the first players to act as a false winger, playing between midfielders and strikers.

Indian-American Legal Scholar Ved Prakash Nanda Passes Away

  • Prominent Indian-American legal scholar, Professor Ved Prakash Nanda passed away.
  • A Padma Bhushan awardee for his contributions to literature and education, Nanda also held prestigious position of the John Evans Distinguished University Professor of International Law at Colorado's University of Denver.
  • He held multiple roles at the University, serving as the Founding Director and Director Emeritus of the International Legal Studies Program, along with being the Director of the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

Actor and DMDK Founder-leader Vijayakanth Dies

  • DMDK founder-leader and popular yesteryear Tamil actor Vijayakanth died in Chennai. He was 71 years old.
  • Widely known as 'Captain', Vijayakanth's life is marked by a successful career in the Tamil film industry.
  • He featured in 154 movies before venturing into politics. He founded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam in 2005.
  • In 2011, DMDK fought the elections in alliance with the AIADMK and contested 41 constituencies, winning 26.
  • The Captain's party scripted history, winning more seats than the DMK in 2011 and emerged as the principal opposition party that year.
  • Vijayakanth served as the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011-2016.

Former EU Commission President Jacques Delors, Passes Away

  • Jacques Delors, the former European Commission chief and a key figure in the establishment of the European Union's historic single currency project, passed away at the age of 98.
  • The French socialist was known for his staunch advocacy of post-war European integration.
  • Delors served an unprecedented three terms as the President of the European Commission, from January 1985 untill the end of 1994. During Delors's decade as the European Commission chief, the EU completed its integrated single market and agreed to introduce a single currency, the euro, and built a common foreign and security policy.
  • A key figure in French politics, Delors also served as the finance minister under President Francois Mitterrand from 1981 to 1984. Despite being a frontrunner in the polls, he chose not to run for the presidency in 1995.

Wolfgang Schaeuble, Veteran of German Politics, Passes Away

  • Wolfgang Schaeuble, who served as a member of the German parliament for over half a century, died at the age of 81, ending one of Germany's longest political careers in which he helped secure his country's place at the heart of Europe.
  • Schaeuble devoted much of his career to re-unifying his country and later served as former chancellor Angela Merkel's Finance Minister during the euro zone debt crisis.
  • As Interior Minister, Schaeuble, who represented the West, was key in drawing up the terms of Germany's reunification treaty, signed in August 1990, after the fall of the Berlin wall.

Noted History Professor Tasneem Suhrawardy Dies

  • Tasneem Suhrawardy, a well-known Indian medieval history academic who taught at Delhi University's St Stephen's College, died.
  • Suhrawardy graduated with honours in History from St Stephen's College in 1986.
  • In 2004, she completed her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University on 'Central Asians in Mughal India: Migration, Settlement and Impact on North Indian Culture'.
  • Besides teaching at St Stephen's College, she was also invited as a guest teacher at prestigious American and Indian educational institutes.

Actor Lee Sun-kyun of Oscar-winning Film 'Parasite' Passes Away

  • Actor Lee Sun-kyun of the Oscar-winning movie Parasite died. Lee was found dead in a car in a central Seoul park.
  • Lee was best known for his role in Parasite, in which he played the head of a wealthy family. In 2021, he won a Screen Actors Guild award for "cast in a motion picture" for his role in the same film.
  • He was nominated for the best actor at the International Emmy Awards for his performance in the sci-fi thriller 'Dr. Brain'.
