Shrikant Madhav Vaidya Takes Charge as IOC Chairman

  • Shrikant Madhav Vaidya took charge as the new chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).
  • Prior to his elevation, Vaidya was the Director (Refineries) on the IOC Board, since October 2019. He succeeded Sanjiv Singh, who superannuated from the services of the Corporation on June 30.
  • Concurrently, Vaidya will also be Chairman of Chennai Petroleum Corporation, a stand-alone refining subsidiary of IOC and Indian Oiltanking Ltd. Vaidya who is on the board of Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd will be taking over as its Chairman and will also be Director on the Board of Petronet LNG.

Indra Mani Pandey India's Next Permanent Representative to UN

  • Diplomat Indra Mani Pandey was appointed as India's next Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva.
  • Pandey, a 1990-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as an additional secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
  • He is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Pandey succeeds Rajiv K. Chander in Geneva.
  • In his nearly three-decade career, Pandey served in Indian missions in Damascus, Cairo, Islamabad, Kabul, Muscat and Geneva.

K. K. Venugopal Reappointed as Attorney General of India

  • K. K. Venugopal was reappointed as the Attorney General for India for one year.
  • His present three-year term ended on 30th June.
  • Venugopal, a leading lawyer of the country, had succeeded Mukul Rohatgi as the Attorney General in June 2017.

Ravinder Bhakar Assumes Charge as CEO of CBFC

  • Ravinder Bhakar, a 1999 batch officer of Indian Railway Stores Service (IRSS), has taken over as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Central Board of Films Certification (CBFC). Prior to his appointment as CEO, CBFC, Mr. Bhakar was posted as the Secretary & Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railways.
  • Bhakar is a Mechanical engineer from MNIT, Jaipur. In his distinguished career as an Indian Engineering Services officer, Bhakar has rich experience of holding many important posts in Indian Railways. He is also recipient of many prestigious awards, including the National award from Minister of Railways for outstanding service & General Manager Award both in Western Railways (WR) & Central Railways (CR) for exemplary service. He has also played a key role in various modernisation drives in WR and CR and was closely associated in developing modern PR techniques, implementation of electronic procurement, formulation of various multi-modal logistics plans & transport management.

Sachin Ashok Sharma Takes over as Secretary to GM of Western Railway

  • Sachin Ashok Sharma (IRTS) took charge of Secretary to General Manager of Western Railway from outgoing Secretary to GM/WR and Chief Public Relations Officer Ravinder Bhakar who has joined as Chief Executive Officer of Central Board of Film Certification.
  • Sharma is an officer of the Indian Railways Traffic Service of 2009 batch and has worked in important assignments pertaining to train operations in previous positions as Senior Divisional Operations Manager of Nagpur and Bilaspur Railway Divisions under South East Central Railway. His role as SR.DOM/Bilaspur particularly holds distinction for having made an all time record of highest freight loading & earning by any division over Indian Railways.

Kannada Novelist Geetha Nagabhushan Passes Away

  • Veteran Kannada Novelist Geetha Nagabhushan passed away at the age of 78 due to cardiac arrest in a private hospital at Kalaburagi. She was born on 25th March 1942 in Savalagi village, Kalaburagi.
  • She started as the Lecturer and retired as the Principal of Nagareshwar College in Kalaburagi.
  • She served as the Chairperson of Karnataka Sahitya Academy
  • She chaired the 76th Akhil Bharat Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, at Gadag in 2010.
  • She got an honorary doctorate from the Gulbarga University.
  • Most of her works challenged the patriarchal approach and discrimination against woman.
  • She wrote around 50 short stories including Avva Mattu Itara Kathegalu and Jwalantha, 27 novels including Baduku, Hasimamsa Mattu Haddugalu, 12 plays, collection of poems and research works.
  • She won the Karnataka Rajotsava Award in 1998.
  • She won the Kendra Sahitya Academy in 2004 for her novel "Baduku" and became the first Kannada woman to bag the award.
  • She was the first woman to win Nadoja Awards of Kannada University Hampi in 2004.

Milton Glaser: Graphic Designer Behind 'I ♥ NY' Logo Dies

  • Milton Glaser, the influential American graphic designer who created the "I ♥ NY" logo, died aged 91.
  • Made for a 1977 tourism campaign, the logo rapidly gained recognition across the world and has been described as the most frequently imitated in history.
  • Glaser was flabbergasted by what happened to this little, simple nothing of an idea.
  • He also created a famous poster of Bob Dylan with psychedelic hair and was a co-founder of New York magazine.
  • In 1954, Glaser set up Push Pin Studios with three Cooper Union classmates and helped bring a new visual language to commercial art.

Punjab Gets First Woman Chief Secretary

  • The ascent of Vini Mahajan, a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, to the top bureaucratic position in Punjab is a story of many firsts.
  • Mahajan is the first woman chief secretary of the state. She is married to Punjab Police chief Dinkar Gupta. This is the first time a couple is holding the top administrative and police posts in the state, and perhaps the first time this has happened anywhere in the country.
  • Gupta, a 1987-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was appointed as head of the state police in February 2019. He was empanelled by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) last month for the post of director general or DG equivalent at the Centre.
