Lalji Tandon Passes Away

  • Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon, passed away at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow. He was 85.
  • Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel had been given the additional charge of Madhya Pradesh after Tandon's illness.
  • Born on April 12, 1935, Tandon was one of the veteran leaders of the BJP and was a protege of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
  • Tandon served as a member of Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council) for two terms, 1978–84 and remained the Leader of House, of the Council, 1990–96. He also remained a member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for three terms, 1996–2009, and remained the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, 2003–07. He had also served as Urban Development minister in the Uttar Pradesh cabinet under Mayawati when BSP-BJP alliance was in power and also in CM Kalyan Singh's cabinet.
  • Tandon also served as Governor of Bihar and was lauded for streamlining academic activities of the state universities. He was appointed as the 22nd Governor of Madhya Pradesh in July 2019.

Ashwini Kumar Tewari New MD & CEO of SBI Cards and Payment Services

  • SBI (State Bank of India) cards and payment services appointed, Mr. Ashwin Kumar Tewari as its new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive officer (CEO) who is intended to be in charge from August 1, 2020.
  • Tewari replaces Mr. Hardayal Prasad, the MD and CEO who will quit the directorship of the company on July 31, 2020 due to voluntary retirement.
  • Prasad, had taken over from Mr. Vijay Jasuja who retired in January 2018.

Renowned Mathematician C. S. Seshadri Passes Away

  • C. S. Seshadri, a towering figure in the field of algebraic geometry and founder of the prestigious Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), passed away. He was 88 years old.
  • Seshadri had mentored many young people who were interested in the field of mathematics and was the man behind the CMI. His contributions in the field were so immense that a constant in algebra was named after him.
  • Seshadri, began his career at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, moved to his home town of Chennai in 1984 to the Institute of Mathematical Sciences. In 1989, he launched the School of Mathematics as part of the SPIC Science Foundation, which is now known as CMI.

Maharashtra's First Woman SEC Neela Satyanarayanan Dies

  • Neela Satyanarayanan, first woman Election Commissioner of Maharashtra and a praised Marathi author died of COVID-19. She died at Seven Hills Hospital at Marol in Andheri (East), Mumbai where she was undergoing treatment for COVID-19.
  • She is a 1972- batch IAS officer from Maharashtra.
  • She worked as the chief secretary (Revenue) and retired in 2009.
  • She was appointed as the First women election commissioner by Congress-NCP government in 2009 and she served till 2014.
  • Neela has written 17 novels and an autobiography "One Full, One Half", an experience of raising a child with down syndrome.

P. Praveen Siddharth New Private Secretary to President

  • P. Praveen Siddharth, a 2001 batch Indian Revenue Service Income Tax cadre officer, was appointed Private Secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind. Mr. Siddharth replaced Vikram Singh, who has now been appointed Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping. Mr. Siddharth is already serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the President's Secretariat.

Renowned Cartoonist, Avad Bin Hassan Jami Passed Away

  • Renowned Gujarati cartoonist, Avad Bin Hassan Jami passed away. He was popularly known as "Jami". His cartoons were published in Gujarati magazine "Abhiyan" for last over two decades. He had also worked in Gujarati newspaper Phhulchhab as a cartoonist. He was a drawing teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jamnagar and became a full-time cartoonist after retirement.

ADB Appoints Ashok Lavasa as Vice President

  • Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa, who was next in the line to head the poll panel, has been appointed as vice president for Private Sector Operations and Public-Private Partnerships at the Asian Development Bank. The surprise announcement was made by the regional development bank.
  • Lavasa would be only the second Election Commissioner to step down from the poll panel before completion of his term. The last time an Election Commissioner put in his papers was in 1973 when Chief Election Commissioner Nagendra Singh was appointed a judge in the International Court of Justice at The Hague.
  • Lavasa succeeds Diwakar Gupta whose term ends on August 31.
  • Lavasa was appointed as Election Commissioner in January 2018.

Malini Parthasarathy New Chairperson of The Hindu Group

  • Malini Parthasarathy took over as the new Chairperson of The Hindu Group of Publications. She replaced N. Ram.
  • Parthasarathy was the Co-Chairperson of The Hindu Group of Publications also the former Editor of The Hindu (2013-16).
  • She was earlier Executive Editor of the paper from 1996 to 2004. Parthasarathy has been a political journalist for three decades and more, writing reports and editorials on major themes in Indian politics and on India's foreign policy, with a major focus on relations with Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • She also founded The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy, a think-tank intended to highlight and scrutinise critical public policy and institutional issues of concern in the national arena. The Centre was launched in January 2013 under the auspices of The Hindu group. She was the Director of the Centre at its inception.
