Congress leader Rajiv Tyagi Passes Away

  • Congress leader Rajiv Tyagi died due to cardiac arrest. Tyagi was the party's general secretary and spokesperson for its Uttar Pradesh unit.
  • Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who is also party in charge for Uttar Pradesh East said Tyagi's death was a personal loss to her.
  • BJP leader Sambit Patra expressed shock at Tyagi's demise saying he had participated in a television debate with him minutes earlier.

Renowned Urdu Poet Rahat Indori Passes Away

  • Celebrated Urdu poet Rahat Indori, whose simple and lucid couplets attracted a huge fan folliwing in India and abroad, passed away.
  • The 70-year-old teacher-turned-poet, who was being treated for COVID-19, died of a heart attack at a hospital in Indore.
  • With a 50-year career in poetry, Indori was known for the lyrics of songs like "M Bole toh" from Munnabhai MBBS (2003), Chori Chori Jab Nazrein Mili from Kareeb (1998), Koi jaye to le aye from Ghatak (1996), and "Neend Churai Meri" from Ishq (1997). His lyrics were used in 11 Bollywood films.
  • Earlier this year, his poem "Bulati hai magar jane ka nahi" went viral on social media, rendering him a sensation among the youth. Memes using the poem's opening lines flooded social media during Valentine's Day.

Soma Mondal Next Chairperson of SAIL

  • Soma Mondal has been selected by the Public Enterprises Selection Board as the next chairman of public sector steel major Steel Authority of India Limited.
  • Her appointment is subject to approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). If the ACC gives its approval, she will make history with the rare distinction of being the first woman chairperson of SAIL. She will also be the first woman to head a major steel company not only in India but also elsewhere in the world.
  • The current chairman of SAIL Anil Chaudhary assumed charge in September 2018 and is due to retire at the end of this year.
  • Anirban Dasgupta SAIL'S Director Production has been shortlisted by PESB in the second slot. Mandal had taken over as Director (Commercial) of Steel Authority of India Limited in September 2018. Prior to this, she was Director (Commercial), NALCO, Bhubaneswar.

Veteran Congress Leader Nandi Yellaiah Passes Away

  • Veteran Congress leader Nandi Yellaiah, who was elected to Lok Sabha six times and Rajya Sabha twice, died while under treatment at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences. He was 78.
  • He was admitted with illness at NIMS where he tested positive for coronavirus.
  • Yellaiah was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Siddipet in 1979 and repeated the feat from the same constituency in 1980, 1989, 1991 and 1996. He lost elections to Telugu Desam candidates in 1984 and 1998. After two stints in the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2014, he was re-elected to the Lok Sabha but this time from Nagarkurnool constituency (SC) in 2014. He continued in the post till general elections last year.
  • Yellaiah began his political career as a corporator of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in 1964. He was a close associate of former Chief Minister Marri Channa Reddy.

Educationist Pradeep Kumar Joshi New Chairman of UPSC

  • Educationist Pradeep Kumar Joshi was appointed the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which conducts the civil services examination to select the country's bureaucrats and diplomats.
  • He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Arvind Saxena, the outgoing chairman of the UPSC.
  • Joshi joined the Commission as its member in May 2015. Prior to joining the Commission, he was the chairman of the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission and the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission, the statement issued by the UPSC said. He also served as the Director of National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA).
  • His tenure as the chairman of the UPSC will be till May 2021. With his appointment as the chairman, there is a vacancy of a member in the UPSC. At present, Bhim Sain Bassi, Air Marshal A. S. Bhonsle (retired), Sujata Mehta, Manoj Soni, Smita Nagaraj, M Sathiyavathy, Bharat Bhushan Vyas, T. C. A. Anant and Rajiv Nayan Choubey are members of the UPSC.

Hardayal Prasad New MD of PNB Housing Finance

  • PNB Housing Finance appointed Hardayal Prasad, the former SBI Card head as its new managing director and chief executive.
  • The housing finance company promoted by country's second largest state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) currently has Neeraj Vyas as its interim chief. Prasad will assume charge on August 10.
  • Prasad a seasoned professional with over three decades of experience in banking, international operations at SBI and later with SBI Card had last month resigned as the managing director and chief executive of SBI Card pursuant to voluntary retirement from SBI.
