100th Death anniversary of Bharathiar observed

  • Rich tributes were paid to poet Subramania Bharati on his 100th death anniversary.
  • At the Mahakavi Bharathi Memorial Library at Karungalpalayam in the city, District Collector H. Krishnanunni garlanded the bust of the poet and paid floral tributes.
  • The library was started as a reading room in 1901 and Bharathiyar visited it on July 31, 1921 and delivered a speech on the topic "Man is Immortal", he last before his death.
  • The reading room was then renamed after him and the building was renovated by the district administration at Rs. 23 lakh and upgraded into a library on March 3, 1978.

Oscar Fernandes, Congress's Man of All Seasons, Passes Away

  • Congress veteran Oscar Fernandes passed away at the age of 80 in Karnataka.
  • Known as a man for all seasons, the veteran Congress leader had handled tricky negotiations with north-east rebels, government and party matters, and fluid movements of Kuchipudi dance form with equal ease.
  • Fernandes had served as the Union Minister for Transport, Road and Highways and Labour and Employment, in the first UPA government. He was also the Chairman of Central Election Authority of the All India Congress Committee. He was previously the AICC General Secretary.
  • Fernandes also served as Parliamentary Secretary to Rajiv Gandhi. He was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha in 1980 from Udupi constituency in Karnataka. A five-term Lok Sabha MP from Udupi in Karnatka, Fernandes was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Congress after he lost the 1999 Lok Sabha elections.

IAMCR Selects Prof. Surbhi Dahiya as an Ambassador

  • The International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) has selected Prof. Surbhi Dahiya as the ambassador for a period of three years.
  • Prof Dahiya is presently Course Director, English Journalism at the Indian institute of Mass Communication (IIMC). IAMCR is a worldwide professional organisation in the field of media and communication research. With her selection, IAMCR, now officially, has three ambassadors which besides Prof. Dahiya include, Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey and Dr. Padmakumar K.
  • As an ambassador, she opines that Indian scholarship should be promoted internationally. She will organise various events with university departments, local and regional media, communication research bodies and think tanks, and NGOs involved in media advocacy and research and encourage Indian scholars to have visibility in International conferences.
  • Internationally, Prof. Dahiya has represented India at many platforms.

Shivani Becomes 1st Woman Excavation Engineer

  • Breaking the glass ceiling, Shivani Meena, an IIT Jodhpur alumna, has become the first woman excavation engineer to work in an open cast mine at Coal India arm CCL.
  • She will be posted at CCL's Rajrappa project, one of the important enterprises of the coal mining behemoth. Until now the position belonged to men.
  • The feat follows another milestone when Akanksha Kumari became Coal India's first woman mining engineer to work in an underground mine at CCL's Churi facility in North Karanpura area in Jharkhand.

Ex-Ivory Coast PM Dies

  • Charles Konan Banny, who served as Ivory Coast's Prime Minister from 2005 to 2007, died in Paris.
  • President Alassane Ouattara paid tribute to Konan Banny, who was 78. Konan had made an important contribution to national reconciliation.
  • As well as serving as Prime Minister, Konan Banny also headed the Commission for Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation that was set up after the violence that followed the disputed 2010 election.

Noted Women's Rights Activist Sonal Shukla Dies

  • Noted women's rights activist Sonal Shukla died after cardiac arrest in Mumbai. She was 80.
  • Shukla was the founder and managing trustee of the Vacha Charitable Trust and worked with adolescent girls and women for four decades.
  • Popularly known as Sonal Ben, Shukla was the co-founder of the group 'Forum Against Rape', now known as the 'Forum Against Oppression of Women'.
