IAF Places Order worth 300 crore with Veda Aeronautics

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) took a huge step towards supporting the domestic drone start-up ecosystem by granting a pioneering contract worth roughly Rs. 300 crore to Veda Aeronautics Drone. This significant award is part of the IAF's ground-breaking Mehar Baba Swarm Drone Competition, which aims to stimulate domestic innovation and technological growth in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
  • At the heart of this historic contract is Veda Aeronautics' unique fixed-wing UAV, a cutting-edge innovation that has enormous promise for a variety of defence applications. These drones, designed to fulfil the particular demands of the current battlefield, have a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 40 kg, making them adaptable assets with a wide range of capabilities.

Navies of India, UAE Conduct Maritime Exercise to Enhance Interoperability

  • The navies of India and the United Arab Emirates carried out a military exercise as part of efforts to boost maritime security cooperation.
  • Indian naval ships INS Visakhapatnam and INS Trikand were part of the exercise.
  • INS Visakhapatnam, commanded by Captain Ashok Rao, is one of the largest operational destroyers in the Indian Navy and is a completely indigenous warship made by the Mazagon Docks Limited.
  • INS Trikand, commanded by Captain Pramod G Thomas, is an advanced stealth frigate commissioned in 2013.

President Murmu to Launch Frigate 'Vindhyagiri' in Kolkata

  • President Droupadi Murmu will launch frigate 'Vindhyagiri' in Kolkata on August 17.
  • Named after the mountain range in Karnataka, Vindhyagiri is the sixth ship of the Project 17A programme.
  • Vindhyagiri, a technologically advanced frigate, pays a befitting tribute to the distinguished service of its predecessor, the erstwhile INS Vindhyagiri.
  • The old Vindhyagiri in its nearly 31 years of service from July 1981 to Jun 2012, had witnessed various challenging operations and multinational exercises.
  • "The newly christened Vindhyagiri stands as a symbol of India's determination to embrace its rich naval heritage while propelling itself towards a future of indigenous defence capabilities.
  • Under the Project 17A programme, a total of four ships by Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) and three ships by GRSE are under construction.
  • The project's first five ships have been launched by the MDL and GRSE between 2019 and 2022.

INS Chennai engages in joint exercise with Royal Saudi Naval Ship HMS Al Jubail

  •  In a clear demonstration of its commitment to ensuring secure maritime environments, the Indian Navy has strategically positioned its indigenous guided missile destroyer, INS Chennai, within the Red Sea. This strategic move signifies a significant step toward safeguarding global waters.
  • In a bid to further enhance the spirit of camaraderie and multifaceted defense alliances between India and Saudi Arabia, INS Chennai conducted a notable port call to Jeddah from August 3rd to 5th  during this port visit, the Commanding Officer of INS Chennai engaged in a productive interaction with the Commander of Jeddah Border Guards. Moreover, as part of the diplomatic exchange, Mohd Shahid Alam, CGI Jeddah, visited the ship to acquaint himself with its operational prowess.
  • The vessel's arrival was met with warm receptions from dignitaries representing the Royal Saudi Naval forces, Border Guards, and the Indian Embassy. Following its port call, INS Chennai embarked on a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Royal Saudi Naval Ship HMS Al Jubail on August 5th.
