Pakistan Appoints Vice Admiral Naveed Ashraf as New Naval Chief

  • Pakistan Navy announced the appointment of Vice Admiral Naveed Ashraf as its new chief amid several security challenges facing the cash-strapped country. Ashraf replaced the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Amjad Niazi.
  • Naveed Ashraf was commissioned in the Operations Branch of the Pakistan Navy in 1989. He is a graduate of the National Defence University Islamabad, the US Naval War College and the UK's Royal College of Defence Studies.
  • The vice admiral has vast experience working in key command and staff positions.

Indian Military Academy Commemorates 91st Raising Day at Dehradun

  • The Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, known as the cradle of military leadership, commemorated its 91th Raising Day with elan and traditional gaiety.
  • As part of the celebrations, various activities were organised which included a wreath laying ceremony at the IMA war memorial to pay homage to martyrs, felicitation of the civilian staff for their performance and a bara khana.
  • Lt Gen V. K. Mishra, Commandant IMA, conveyed his appreciation to the academy fraternity for their dedication and contribution towards transforming the academy into a world class military institution.
  • He said that the IMA had rendered outstanding service to the nation by nurturing and churning out well trained and professionally capable officers.
  • The IMA came into existence on October 1, 1932 and in the last 90 years, the academy has raised its training capacity from 40 gentlemen cadets to 1,650.

India, Bangladesh Kick-start Military Exercise in Meghalaya

  • India and Bangladesh began a two-week military exercise in Meghalaya's Umroi with an aim to share tactical drills and promote best practices in carrying out sub-conventional operations. The exercise 'SAMPRITI-XI' promises to further enhance the defence cooperation between India and Bangladesh, fostering deeper bilateral relations, cultural understanding and mutual benefits from shared experiences.
  • This exercise, alternatingly organised by both countries, signifies strong bilateral defence cooperation initiatives. With its inception in Jorhat, Assam in 2009, the exercise has witnessed 10 successful editions till 2022.
  • The exercise 'SAMPRITI-XI' concludes on October 16.

Lt General Raghu Srinivasan Takes Over As Border Roads Organisation Chief

  • Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan assumed charge as the 28th Director General (DG) of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). His appointment to the top post in the BRO follows the superannuation of Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry. Prior to his appointment as the 28th DG of the BRO, the general officer was holding the appointment of Commandant, College of Military Engineering, Pune.
  • Srinivasan is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in 1987.

Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti Takes Charge as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff

  • Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti assumed charge as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff.
  • He succeeded Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, who retired after more than 38 years of illustrious service.
  • Vice Admiral Sobti was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988, and is a navigation and direction specialist.
  • In his career spanning over 35 years, he has held a variety of command and staff appointments -- both ashore and afloat. The flag officer has commanded INS Nishank, a missile boat, INS Kora, a missile corvette, and guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata.

30th Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise Successfully Concludes

  • The 30th edition of Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) successfully concluded in Singapore. Indian Naval Ships Ranvijay, Kavaratti, submarine Sindhukesari, and a long-range Maritime Patrol Aircraft P8I participated in the exercise.
  • The exercise included combined aviation, firefighting, and damage control exercises were conducted during the period. The exercise witnessed the signing of a Joint Standard Operating Procedure on Submarine Rescue between India and Singapore in the presence of the High Commissioner of India to Singapore and the Singapore Navy Fleet Commander.

Indian Army Launches 'Project DARPAN' and 'Project SPEARS' to Prepare Youths of Upper Assam for C...

  • Indian Army signed a tripartite MoU for Project DARPAN (Dao and Rising Sun Preparatory Academy in NE) and Project SPEARS (Selection & Preparation for Employment in Army by Rising Sun) with National Integrity and Educational Development Organisation (NIEDO), Coal India Limited and Oil India Limited.
  • The MoU signed between Indian Army, NIEDO, Oil India Ltd & Coal India Ltd aims to provide value-based education to the under privileged children of Upper Assam.
  • The Indian Army, through these initiatives, aims at establishing a major educational hub in Dibrugarh district to prepare children of weaker sections of the society for NDA & CDS entrance exams.
  • The project offers free of cost residential coaching facility along with free lodging & messing for approximately 120 deserving children over a span of one year.

India Holds Maiden Women Military Officers Course for ASEAN Nations

  • In the pursuit towards strengthening military-diplomatic ties, the Indian Army is conducting a unique Women Military Officers Course for women military officers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries and the Indian Army.
  • The course conducted at Delhi was themed on the United Nations framework and designed as an empowering and collaborative training programme.
  • It underscored India and ASEAN's shared commitment to foster greater international cooperation in support of enduring world peace while ensuring gender equality.

Seven Countries Order Ammunition under EU Scheme to Aid Ukraine

  • Seven EU countries ordered ammunition under a landmark European Union procurement scheme to get urgently needed artillery shells to Ukraine and replenish depleted Western stocks.
  • The orders - placed under contracts negotiated by the European Defence Agency (EDA) - are for 155mm artillery rounds, one of the most important munitions in the intense war of attrition between Ukraine's troops and Russia's invading forces.
  • The scheme was set up as part of a plan worth at least 2 billion euros, launched in March with the aim of getting 1 million artillery shells and missiles to Ukraine within a year.

Taiwan Launches the Island's First Domestically made Submarine for Testing

  • Taiwan's President launched the island's first domestically made submarine for testing at a port in Kaohsiung. The submarine, if successful in its tests, will be a major breakthrough for Taiwan in shipbuilding and design.
  • The submarine, named Hai Kun, or literally "Sea Kun," is named for a type of fish found in Chinese literature called Kun, of legendary proportions. It took seven years of design and construction.
  • It will only be handed over to the military after passing both its harbor and ocean-faring tests. Taiwan plans to build another submarine if successful, with both to be deployed by 2027.

Germany and Israel Sign historic Missile Shield Deal

  • Germany signed a deal to acquire the Israeli-made Arrow 3 hypersonic missile system that will become a key part of Europe's defence against air attack. The signing of the deal was a historic day for both countries.
  • Worth around $3.5 billion (3.3 billion euros), the sale is the biggest ever deal for Israel's military industry. The Arrow 3 system would make German air defence ready for the future. Germany has led a push to bolster NATO's air defences in Europe after the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, urging allies to buy deterrence systems together.
  • The system was developed and produced by Israel and the United States and the sale had to be approved by Washington before it could be finalised. The system was first deployed at an Israeli air force base in 2017 and has been used to protect Israel against attacks from Iran and Syria.
