Indian Army's New Tech Unit STEAG

  • The Indian Army set up a specialised technology unit called Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG) to research and evaluate next-generation communication technologies.
  • STEAG will focus on studying and adapting technologies like: Artificial Intelligence, 5G and 6G networks, Machine Learning and Quantum Technologies.
  • The aim is to develop advanced communication capabilities for defence applications and future warfare.
  • STEAG will operate under the Corps of Signals, which handles military communications.
  • STEAG will be a premier organization to harness niche technology, identify suitable use-cases for defence, and foster collaboration with academia and industry.

Guyana Inks Deal to Purchase Indian-Made Dornier Aircraft

  • The Indian defence industry is expanding its reach to the Caribbean region. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) inked a deal to purchase two aircraft from India with a loan of $23.27 million from the Export-Import Bank of India.
  • Guyana will acquire two Dornier 228 aircraft made by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) of India.
  • An agreement was signed between the Guyanese Finance Minister and the Deputy GM of EXIM Bank.
  • The HAL Dornier 228 aircraft are ideal for Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL), suitable for Guyana's terrain.
  • These planes will be used by Guyana for: Maritime patrols, resupplying military bases and troop movement to interior locations.
  • This is the first-ever defence loan that India has provided to any Caribbean country.
  • Guyana, which has a large Indian diaspora, also plans to purchase patrol vehicles, radars, and armoured vehicles from India.

Indo-US Naval Exercise Tiger Triumph - 24 Begins

  • Indian Navy Ships with integral helicopters and landing crafts embarked Indian Navy aircraft. Indian Army personnel and vehicles and Indian Air Force aircraft and helicopters along with the Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT) would be participating in the exercise. 
  • In consonance with the established partnership between India and the US, a bilateral tri-Service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise between both countries, Tiger Triumph-24, is scheduled on the Eastern Seaboard from 18 to 31 Mar 24. 
  • The US would be represented by US Navy Ships with embarked troops of the US Marine Corps and US Army. The exercise is aimed at developing interoperability for conducting HADR operations and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enable rapid and smooth coordination between forces of both countries.

Indian Army Contingent Departs for Seychelles for Joint Military Exercise 'Lamitiye-2024'

  • An Indian Army contingent departed for Seychelles in March to participate in the 10th edition of Joint Military Exercise 'LAMITIYE-2024', the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
  • The Joint Exercise between the Indian Army and Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) will be conducted at Seychelles from March 18 to 27.
  • 'LAMITIYE' meaning 'Friendship' in the Creole language is a biennial training event and has been conducted in the Seychelles since 2001. 45 personnel each from the GORKHA RIFLES of the Indian Army and Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) will participate in the exercise.
  • "The aim of the exercise is to enhance interoperability in sub-conventional operations in a semi-urban environment under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter on Peacekeeping Operations. The exercise will enhance cooperation and interoperability between both sides during peacekeeping operations. The exercise will also build and promote bilateral military relations in addition to exchanging skills, experiences and good practices between both armies," the statement read.
  • Both sides will jointly train, plan and execute a series of well-developed tactical drills for the neutralisation of likely threats that may be encountered in a semi-urban environment, while exploiting and showcasing new-generation equipment and technology.
  • The 10-day joint exercise will include field training exercises, combat discussions, lectures and demonstrations, which culminate in two days of validation exercises.

MoD Signs Contract with HAL for Mid Life Upgrade of 25 Dornier Aircraft of Indian Navy

  • The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for Mid Life Upgrade (MLU) of 25 Dornier Aircraft along with associated equipment for the Indian Navy at a cost of Rs. 2,890 crore.
  • The MLU for Dornier Aircraft includes an upgrade to incorporate state-of-the-art avionics systems and primary role sensors.
  • As per the defence ministry, the project will be implemented within six and half years.
  • The upgrade would significantly enhance the operational capability of the Dornier aircraft of the Indian Navy to perform primary roles of maritime surveillance, coastal surveillance, electronic intelligence and development of maritime domain awareness.

Rajnath Singh Inaugurates India Navy's First Independent Headquarters 'Nausena Bhawan' in Delhi

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 'Nausena Bhawan', the new state-of-the-art headquarters of the Indian Navy at the Delhi Cantonment which is equipped with modern facilities and cutting-edge technologies. It marks a significant milestone for the Navy as it has established its first independent headquarters in Delhi.
  • Previously, the Navy operated from 13 different locations, necessitating a consolidated and purpose-built facility such as the 'Nausena Bhawan'.

This New Laser Weapon can Destroy Drones, Missiles at the Cost of a Pizza

  • Britain has successfully test fired its DragonFire laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) that shoots down enemy aircraft and missiles at a per-shot cost of less than £10, or Rs. 1,056, United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (UK MoD) revealed.
  • During a trial at the (UK) MoD's Hebrides Range, the DragonFire LDEW system achieved the UK's first high-power firing of a laser weapon against aerial targets. The range of DragonFire is classified, but it is a line-of-sight weapon and can engage with any visible target.

India, Brazil Hold First '2+2' Defence and Foreign Ministerial Dialogue

  • India and Brazil explored ways to expand cooperation in areas of energy, critical minerals, technology and counter-terrorism at their first '2+2' defence and foreign ministerial dialogue.
  • Discussions spanned defence, space, energy, critical minerals, tech, counter-terrorism and regional, multilateral & other issues of mutual interest.
  • It was co-chaired by additional secretary in the external affairs ministry G. V. Srinivas and joint secretary in the defence ministry Vishwesh Negi.
  • The Brazilian delegation was led by Director at Brazilian foreign ministry Marcelo Camara and Rear Admiral Fernando de Luca Marques de Oliviera.
