Cambodia and China will hold joint annual military drills amid US concerns that Beijing could use a Cambodian naval base to expand its influence in the region.
A Chinese warship brought troops and materials for the exercises in the coastal city of Sihanoukvill.
More than 2,000 troops, including 760 Chinese military personnel, will participate in the drills at a training centre in central Kampong Chhnang province and at sea off Preah Sihanouk province.
Cambodia has long been a staunch ally of China, receiving billions of dollars in investments.
The 15-day joint Cambodian-Chinese drills, dubbed Golden Dragon, will involve 14 warships -- three from China -- two helicopters and 69 tanks, and include live-fire, anti-terrorism and humanitarian exercises.

Meghalaya Gets First Woman Police Chief
Meghalaya is all set to get its first woman head of police with Idashisha Nongrang, a 1992-batch IPS officer, being appointed its new DGP.
The outgoing DGP, L. R. Bishnoi, will demit office on May 19, following which Nongrang will take charge on May 20. Nongrang, who is currently Meghalaya Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guard, was appointed to the top post for a period of two years.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla Assumes Charge as Chief of Personnel
Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla assumed charge as the Chief of Personnel of the Navy.
Commissioned in the Navy on January 1, 1989, Vice Admiral Bhalla held a number of specialist and operational appointments in his career both at sea and onshore.
After completing his specialisation course in communication and electronic warfare, he served as a specialist on board several frontline warships. He commanded INS Nishank, INS Taragiri and INS Beas. He was also the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF).
Vice Admiral Bhalla was the officer in 'tactical command' for the prestigious President's Fleet Review (PFR-22) and during the sea phase of the Navy's flagship multinational exercise MILAN-22. He has held important staff appointments at Naval Headquarters and also held a diplomatic assignment overseas.
India-France to Hold 7th Edition of Exercise 'Shakti' from May 13-26
In a bid to strengthen defence ties, India and France will conduct the 7th edition of the Joint Military Exercise 'Shakti' from May 13-26 in the Umroi region of Meghalaya.
The exercise aims to enhance the joint military capacity of both sides to undertake Multi-Domain Operations in a Sub Conventional scenario.
Additionally, the joint exercise will facilitate the development of interoperability bonhomie, and camaraderie between the Armed Forces of both nations.

DRDO Hands over Nine Defence Tech Projects to IIT-Bhubaneswar
Nine projects sanctioned from the electronics and communication systems (ECS) cluster of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were handed over to IIT-Bhubaneswar at a collaboration meeting.
IIT-Bhubaneswar will work on these sanctioned projects, which would be beneficial in electronics warfare, AI-driven surveillance, power systems and radar systems.
Informing about the projects, head of Electrical Science school of IIT-Bhubaneswar S. R. Samantaray said that the collaboration of IIT-Bhubaneswar and DRDO will contribute to the emerging research and development need of defence applications, creating platform for 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat'.
Inter-Services Organisations Act Notified
The Inter-Services Organisations (Command, Control and Discipline) Act was notified in a gazette and was enforced with effect from May 10, the Defence Ministry said. The move came amid the theaterisation plan envisioned by the government.
Under the theaterisation model, the government seeks to integrate the capabilities of the Army, the Air Force and the Navy, and optimally utilise their resources for wars and operations.
The Act empowers Commanders-in-Chief and Officers-in-Command of ISOs to exercise control over service personnel, serving under them, for effective maintenance of discipline and administration, without disturbing the unique service conditions of each individual service.
Indian Army to Get Drishti-10 Drones
In a significant boost to its surveillance capabilities along the Pakistan border, the Indian Army is set to receive the first Hermes-900 Starliner drone on June 18.
The Hermes-900 known as the Drishti-10 drone is being supplied to Indian forces including Indian Army and Navy by Adani Defence Systems.
The first of the two drones to be acquired by the Indian Army would be handed over to the force on June 18 in Hyderabad. The supplies are part of the deal signed under the emergency powers given to forces by the Defence Ministry.
The Indian Army will deploy the drones at its Bhatinda base from where it can keep an eye on the entire western border with Pakistan, they said.
The first Hermes-900 was delivered to the Indian Navy in January this year. The second drone is being taken by the Army.

Indian Navy to Hold Maritime Exercise with Singapore Navy to Enhance Operability
The Indian Navy is looking forward to further enhancing its operability with the Singapore Navy and understanding of each other's operational philosophy by holding joint maritime exercises, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet Read Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar said. Addressing a reception for 150 guests from Singapore's defence sector, heads of diplomatic missions and Indian diaspora on board INS Shakti at the Changi Naval Base, he said that the navies of the two countries are planning to hold the 31st edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) which will be held at Visakhapatnam in the fourth quarter of this year.
