Retired IAS Officer Arun Goel Appointed Election Commissioner

  • President Droupadi Murmu appointed retired IAS officer Arun Goel as an Election Commissioner, a day after the former Punjab cadre officer took voluntary retirement from the service.
  • The post of one Election Commissioner in the three-member commission was vacant since May 15, when then-Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar took charge as the Chief Election Commissioner upon the retirement of Sushil Chandra from the post.
  • A Punjab cadre officer of the 1985 batch, Goel joins Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey in the poll panel.

PM Modi Inaugurates Arunachal's First Greenfield Airport Donyi Polo Airport

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first Greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh, the Donyi Polo Airport at Itanagar, and dedicated the 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station to the nation. Northeast India now has 16 airports.
  • The foundation stone for this airport was laid by the PM in 2019. The airport was developed in an area of over 690 acres, at the cost of more than Rs. 640 crore.
  • The 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station, built at a cost of Rs. 8,450 crore, is the largest such project commissioned in the region with the potential to generate 3353 million units of energy annually. It will provide nearly 398 million units (equivalent to Rs. 200 crore) of free power to Arunachal.
  • It is also estimated to generate Rs. 8,000 crore revenue for the north-eastern state.

Shahjahanpur District of UP amongst Top Ranked District on the Jal Jeevan Mission

  • Shahjahanpur became number one in the country in giving maximum number of tap connections in a month. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Shahjahanpur has created history in providing tap connections to every household in rural areas.
  • According to the data given on the website of Jal Jeevan Mission, Bulandshahr, Bareilly, Mirzapur also got a place in this survey. This achievement has been considered as a big leap in the matter of rural drinking water supply. In this survey, districts are selected across the country on the basis of the progress of the scheme.
  • The names of Shahjahanpur, Bulandshahr and Bareilly were registered among the best performing districts of UP in October. In the ranking of districts, Shahjahanpur topped the best performing category by scoring 689990 marks. Bulandshahr was second scoring 657180 marks and Bareilly was third in this category scoring 619114 marks.

PM Modi Inaugurates Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the month-long Kashi Tamil Sangamam at the amphitheatre ground of the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi.
  • The event aims to revive cultural ties between Kashi and Tamil Nadu.
  • The Sangamam is organized by the Government of India as a part of the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' and to uphold the Spirit of 'Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat'.
  • The PM during the event also released books on Tirukkural and Kashi-Tamil culture and interacted with Tamil students.
  • UP Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan and others were present at the grand event.
  • Organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with IIT Chennai and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the event will witness more than 51 cultural events.

CEC Rajiv Kumar Invited as International Observer for Nepal Polls

  • Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar was invited by the Election Commission of Nepal as an international observer for the elections there.
  • Elections in Nepal were held on November 20 to elect 275 members of the Federal Parliament and 550 seats of the seven Provincial Assemblies.
  • Kumar led a delegation of ECI officials as state guest in Nepal from November 18 to 22.

Farooq Abdullah Steps Down as National Conference Chief

  • Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah stepped down as the president of the National Conference. The move came as Jammu and Kashmir prepares for polls. Farooq Abdullah informed his colleagues of his decision to step down as president of JKNC. In spite of the best efforts of senior colleagues in the party Farooq was adamant that he wouldn't review his decision.

ED Director Sanjay K. Mishra Gets One-year Extension

  • The Union Government extended by one year the tenure of ED Director Sanjay Kumar Mishra.
  • As per the order issued by the Personnel Ministry, the 1984-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer has been given the extension till November 18, 2023.
  • The government in 2021 brought an ordinance allowing that the tenure of the directors of the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) can be extended by up to three years after the mandated term of two years.
  • Mishra was subsequently given a one-year extension then, his second.

Ashok Gehlot Govt. to Issue NRR Cards for Non-resident Rajasthanis

  • Non-resident Rajasthanis (NRR) could soon get NRR cards that would serve as a unique identity document for them and provide some special privileges.
  • The proposal to issue NRR cards is part of the NRR policy, released recently by Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, a separate policy especially for the Rajasthani diaspora.
  • "Our new NRR Policy proposes to engage NRRs in the economic, social and cultural development of the State and work out plans to forge beneficial relationship with them," State Industries Minister Shakuntala Rawat said.
  • The policy has been formulated on the 'five-C concept' of Connect, Culture, Community, Care and Contribution.

C. V. Ananda Bose is New Governor of West Bengal

  • Former bureaucrat C. V. Ananda Bose was appointed the Governor of West Bengal.
  • Bose (71) is a 1977 batch (retired) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Kerala cadre. He last served as an administrator in the National Museum before superannuating in 2011.
  • His appointment will take effect on the date he assumes charge of his office.
  • Manipur Governor La Ganesan had been holding the additional charge of West Bengal since July this year after incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar was nominated as the vice president candidate by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

  • Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha launching 'Amar Sarkar' at the Muktadhara auditorium in Agartala.
  • The Chief Minister said that the state government is 'Amar Sarkar' or a government of every single citizen. Its government is constantly working to fulfil people's expectations and solve their problems. We want to provide benefits of all central and state-sponsored schemes to the people and this is possible only through technology. To ensure this, the portal was launched to help people register problems and complaints through village committee officials. The portal will work as a bridge between the people and the government.

Arunachal Pradesh Launches Drone-mediated Livestock Vaccines Delivery Service

  • In a bid to ease the transportation of essential medicines to remote areas, vaccines were delivered in Arunachal Pradesh through drones for the first time in the world.
  • Hyderabad-based vaccine maker, Indian Immunologicals Limited, successfully demonstrated the delivery of 'medicines from the sky'. IIL performed its maiden venture of transporting animal vaccines through the use of drones.
  • "Today for the first time livestock vaccines were delivered by drone from Kangkong to Paglam in the Lower Dibang Valley district. The exercise was done with the assistance of GoI and Techeagle Company," said Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu.
  • The vaccines provided by IIL were delivered by the drones of Redwing Aerospace. 'Medicines from Sky' is the brainchild of this Bengaluru-based company. The initiative is funded by the United States Agency for International Development and is currently in its initial phase.

Advisor Arvind Virmani Named as Full-time Member of NITI Aayog

  • Former Chief Economic Advisor, Arvind Virmani was appointed as a full time member of NITI Aayog. The other existing Members of NITI Aayog are V.K. Saraswat, Ramesh Chand and V.K. Paul. While Suman Bery is the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, Parameswaran is the incumbent CEO of the think tank. The Prime Minister approved the appointment of Arvind Virmani, Founder, Chairman, Foundation for Economic Growth & Welfare as Full-Time Member, NITI Aayog with immediate effect and until further orders, on the same terms and conditions as are applicable to Full-Time Members of NITI Aayog.
  • Virmani was Chief Economic Advisor in the Finance Ministry from 2007-09. He was Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) till end 2012. He served as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on monetary policy from February 2013 to August 2016.

Centre Extends Tenure of DCGI Dr. V. G. Somani by another Three Months

  • The tenure of Dr. V. G. Somani as the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) was again extended by another three months, according to an order issued by the Union Health Ministry.
  • He was earlier given an extension in August 2022.
  • Dr. Somani was appointed the DCGI for a term of three years on August 14, 2019.
  • The DCGI heads the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), which is responsible for ensuring quality drugs supply across the country.It also has authority to give approval to new drugs and regulate clinical trials.

Assam Govt. Launches Mission Basundhara 2.0

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the much-awaited Mission Basundhara 2.0 in an official ceremony held at Shrimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Auditorium in Guwahati.
  • Sarma launched Basundhara 2.0 in Guwahati. Apart from formal launch of the service under Mission Basundhara 2.0, the Chief Minister also launched the National Generic Documents Registration System (NGDRS) and e-stamping facilities in the state.
  • It is worth mentioning that under Mission Basundhara 2.0, a total of eight services would be provided to the public in digital mode. The new services under Mission Basundhara 2.0 are the settlement of government Khas and ceiling surplus land, conferring ownership rights to occupancy tenants, settlement of transferred annual Patta land, settlement of village grazing reserve and professional grazing reserve, settlement of land for indigenous special cultivators, settlement of hereditary land of tribal communities, composite land transfer service and online payment of land revenue.
  • The first phase of Mission Basundhara was launched in 2021 to provide a time-bound solution to several services under the revenue department. It had wound up in May 2022, with six lakh people benefiting from it.

NCW Launches Digital Shakti Campaign 4.0 to Empower Women in Cyberspace

  • With a view to make women aware to stand against any illegal or inappropriate online activity, the National Commission for Women (NCW) launched the fourth phase of Digital Shakti Campaign, a pan-India project on digitally empowering and skilling women in cyberspace.
  • The NCW launched the campaign in collaboration with CyberPeace Foundation and Meta.
  • NCW mentioned the continuous efforts of the Commission for empowering women in every sphere across the nation.
  • Digital Shakti started in June 2018 to help women across the nation to raise the awareness level on the digital front, to build resilience, and fight cyber-crime in the most effective ways.
