Indian Men's Team Wins Bronze, First Olympics Medal after 41 Years

Indian men's hockey team created history at the Tokyo Olympics by winning a bronze, their first medal in 41 years from the sport. Manpreet Singh's side defeated Germany 5-4 in a thrilling third-place clash to come away with the bronze medal. It was a sensational comeback by the Indian side as they came back from 1-3 down in the 2nd quarter to win 5-4.

Lovlina Borgohain Signs Off with Boxing Bronze

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) signed off with a bronze medal in the Olympic Games after a comprehensive 0-5 loss to reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli, bringing an end to the country's campaign in the sport.

India Women Lose to Argentina in Hockey Semis

The Indian women's hockey team put up a gritty performance but it was not enough to secure a maiden Olympic final berth as it lost 1-2 to world no.2 Argentina in a hard-fought semi-final of the ongoing Games.
India still has a chance to win the bronze medal as they will take on Great Britain in the third-fourth place play-off match.

Russia's Svetlana Romashina Sets Record with 6th Olympic Gold

Russia's Svetlana Romashina claimed her record sixth Olympic gold medal in artistic swimming, teaming with Svetlana Kolesnichenko to win the duet.
The Russians were heavy favorites in a sport they have dominated for more than two decades. Their last Olympic loss in what was then known as synchronized swimming came at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Romashina had been tied with fellow Russians Anastasia Davydova and Natalia Ishchenko with five golds medals apiece.

FIFA Bans its Former Stand-in President Issa Hayatou for 1 Year

FIFA banned its former interim president Issa Hayatou for alleged wrongdoing in a commercial deal for African soccer.
"Hayatou, who was Confederation of African Football president for 29 years until 2017, was banned for one year for a breach of "duty of loyalty" rules, said FIFA.
Hayatou was a long-time FIFA vice president and its stand-in president for several months between Sepp Blatter's suspension from office in October 2015 and the election of Gianni Infantino four months later.
The 74-year-old Cameroonian lost the CAF presidency in 2017 in an election against Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar, whose campaign had been supported by Infantino.

New World Record by Warholm in 400m Hurdles

Karsten Warholm of Norway has broken his own world record to win the 400-meter hurdles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
The two-time world champion ran 45.94 seconds to win a final where six of the first seven finishers set either national or area records.
It's the second time in just over a month that Warholm has lowered the record. He set the previous mark of 46.70 at Oslo on July 1.
Rai Benjamin of the United States took the silver in 46.17 and Alison dos Santos of Brazil took the bronze.

Anurag Thakur Launches Paralympic Theme Song "Kar De Kamaal Tu"

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur launched the theme song for the Indian Paralympic contingent in New Delhi. The song is titled "Kar De Kamaal Tu". The composer and singer of the song is Sanjeev Singh, a Divyang cricket player from Lucknow. 54 para-sportspersons across 9 sports disciplines are participating in Paralympic Games in Tokyo, beginning August 24, 2021.

US Clinches CONCACAF Gold Cup in Football

USA's men's national team stunned Mexico with a 1-0 victory in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup final in Las Vegas to clinch the title and pull off a big upset.
The game was won by a thrilling set-piece goal netted by defender Miles Robinson with three minutes remaining in extra time. Robinson beat Mexico's Edson Alvarez to a wonderful pass by Kellyn Acosta in the middle of the Mexican penalty area in the 117th minute to seal off the victory.
The United States earned their seventh Gold Cup championship, their first since 2017, tying Mexico for the most in the 15-year history of the competition. After winning the CONCACAF Nations League in June, this is the USA's second major final triumph over Mexico.

Debutant Neeraj Chopra Qualifies for Final in First Attempt

Top Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra, making his Olympics debut at Tokyo, threw a massive 86.65 m in his very first attempt and easily qualified for the final. The qualification mark for the final was set at 83.5 m but Chopra didn't need a second attempt to reach the mark. Part of Group A of the qualification in javelin, no one could come close to Chopra's mark with 2017 World Champion Johannes Vetter emerging second best with a throw of 85.64 m.

Viktor Axelsen Wins Olympic Badminton Gold

Denmark's Viktor Axelsen won the men's Olympic badminton gold in Tokyo, becoming the first non-Asian man to win the singles title since 1996.
World No. 2 Axelsen beat China's defending champion Chen Long 21-15, 21-12.
Axelsen, who won bronze at the 2016 Rio Games, followed in the footsteps of compatriot Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, the Atlanta Games champion and the last winner from outside Asia.

Indian Men's Hockey Team to Compete for Bronze

The Indian men's hockey team's dream of entering the Olympics final after 41-years remained unfulfilled as it lost 2-5 to world champions Belgium in the last-four stage but the side is still in the hunt for a bronze in the Tokyo Games. Alexander Hendrickx the tournament's highest goal getter, scored a hat-trick while Loick Luypaert and John-John Dohmen also struck to hand the reigning silver-medalists their second successive entry into the final of the Olympics.
India's goals came from the sticks of Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh. India's last appearance in the final of the Olympics came way back in 1980 Moscow Games, where they went on to win their last of the eight gold medals.

Yulimar Rojas Creates New World Record in Women's Triple Jump

Venezuelan athlete Yulimar Rojas won the women's triple jump gold at the Tokyo Olympics, while also breaking the World Record that was set in 1995.
Rojas emerged victorious with a final jump of 15.67 meters (51.4 feet), surpassing the 1995 record of 15.50 meters (50.8 feet) set by Ukrainian athlete Inessa Kravets.
The two-time world champion had won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

India Enters Olympics Men's Hockey Semis after 49 Years

The Indian men's hockey team defeated Great Britain 3-1 in a quarter-final match to qualify for the semi-finals of Olympics Games after 49 years.
India scored three field goals through Dilpreet Singh (7th minute), Gurjant Singh (16th) and Hardik Singh (57th) to seal the win for the eight-time Olympic champions.
The lone goal for Great Britain was scored by Sam Ward in the 45th minute.
The last time India featured in the semi-finals of the Olympics was in 1972 Munich Games where they lost 0-2 to arch-rivals Pakistan.
India will take on world champions Belgium in the semi-final.

Artem Dolgopyat Wins Israel's First Olympics Gymnastics Gold

Ukraine-born Artem Dolgopyat won the men's floor exercise for Israel's first-ever Olympic gymnastics gold.
Dolgopyat, twice a world silver medallist in the same event, posted a score of 14.933, the same as Zapata. But the Israeli took the top spot on the podium because his routine had a higher degree of difficulty.
China's Xiao Ruoteng took the bronze for his third medal in the Tokyo Games.

Badminton star P. V. Sindhu Wins Bronze

Reigning world champion P. V. Sindhu became India's first woman to win two Olympic medals, comfortably securing a bronze in the badminton women's singles third-place play-off. The men's hockey team delivered a historic win soon afterwards, advancing to the Olympics for the first time in 49 years and capping off a Super Sunday for India in Tokyo.
Sindhu, who has returned with medals from each of the big-ticket events such as Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and BWF World Tour Finals in the last five years, outwitted eighth seed Bing Jiao 21-13 21-15 to add a bronze to her silver that she had secured at the 2016 Rio Games.
Wrestler Sushil Kumar is the first and only other Indian to win two Olympic medals, following up his bronze at 2008 Beijing and with a silver at the London edition.

Italy's New Sprint King Jacobs

Lamont Marcell Jacobs claimed a stunning upset victory in the Olympic men's 100 metre final, becoming the first Italian to take the most coveted title in athletics and doing it in a European record time of 9.80 seconds.
American Fred Kerley took silver in a personal best 9.84 with Canada's Andre de Grasse repeating his bronze of 2016 in 9.89, also a new best.
Jacobs had fired a warning with a European record of 9.84 in the semis to become the first Italian to make the final. But even in the most open-looking showdown for decades, the man who had never gone under 10 seconds until this year still seemed a long shot to be the first European winner since Briton Linford Christie in 1992.

Sensational Emma McKeon Wins 7th Medal at the Games

Australia's Emma McKeon became the first female swimmer to win seven medals at a single Olympic Games after completing the sprint double with victory in the 50 m freestyle and then winning another gold in the women's 4x100 medley relay.
Emma McKeon won two more golds and became the first female swimmer — and second woman in any sport — to claim seven medals at one Olympics. Four of them were gold, the other three bronze.
The only other woman to win seven — in any sport — was Soviet gymnast Maria Gorokhovskaya, who claimed two golds and five silvers at the 1952 Helsinki Games.

Indian Discus Thrower Kamalpreet Kaur Qualifies for the Finals

India discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur qualified for the Tokyo Olympics finals after finishing second in the women's discus throw qualification event at Olympic Stadium.
Kamalpreet was only the second thrower who achieved the automatic qualification of 64.00m after USA's Valarie Allman as the latter threw 66.42m in her first attempt.
