Indian GM Iniyan Wins Noisiel International Open Chess Tournament

Indian Grandmaster P. Iniyan won the Noisiel International Open 2021 Chess Tournament, scoring eight points from nine rounds in the Classical event after securing the top prize in the Blitz section.
Iniyan (Elo rating 2506) finished half a point ahead of higher rated GM Yuri Solodovnichenko of Ukraine (Elo 2561) who secured 7.5 points, while French International Master Kambrath Yannick took 3rd place.
Iniyan won seven of the nine games he played, including against two French International Masters. He drew two games and one of those was against Ukraine's Solodovnichenko.

Paralympics: Yogesh Kathuniya Wins Silver in Discus Throw

Discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya clinched a silver medal in the men's F56 event in the Paralympics as athletics remained India's happy hunting ground at the Games.
Yogesh a B.Com graduate from New Delhi's Kirorimal College, sent the disc to a best distance of 44.38 m in his sixth and last attempt to clinch the silver.
Kathuniya suffered a paralytic attack at the age of eight which left him with coordination impairments in his limbs.
Brazil's defending champion, reigning world champion and world record holder Claudiney Batista dos Santos won the gold with a best throw of 45.59 m while Leonardo Diaz Aldana (43.36 m) of Cuba took the bronze.

Paralympics: Sumit Antil Wins Gold

Javelin thrower Sumit Antil clinched India's second gold at the ongoing Paralympics, shattering the men's F64 category world record multiple times in a stunning Games debut performance.
Sumit from Sonepat in Haryana, who lost his left leg below the knee after he was involved in a motorbike accident in 2015, sent the spear to 68.55 m in his fifth attempt, which was the best of the day by quite a distance and a new world record.
Australian Michal Burian (66.29 m) and Sri Lanka's Dulan Kodithuwakku (65.61 m) took the silver and bronze, respectively.
The F64 category is for athletes with a leg amputation, who compete with prosthetics in a standing position.

Nishad Kumar Wins Silver at Tokyo Paralympics

High jumper Nishad Kumar clinched a silver medal in the men's high jump T47 event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. He made a jump of 2.06 m and also went on to create an Asian record as the event turned out to be a good affair for the Indian para-athlete.
USA's Roderick Townsend and Dallas Wise won gold and bronze medals, respectively. Townsend made the jump of 2.15m while Wise recorded a jump of 2.06 m.
Nishad and Wise both finished on the same mark, but Nishad had crossed the 2.02 mark in his first attempt while Wise took two, as a result, Nishad won silver.

Paddler Bhavinaben Patel Wins Historic Silver at Tokyo Paralympics

Indian table tennis player Bhavinaben Patel signed off with a historic silver medal in her maiden Paralymic Games after going down 0-3 to world number one Chinese paddler Ying Zhou in the women's singles class 4 final.
Patel's impressive run at the Games ended with a 7-11, 5-11, 6-11 loss to Zhou, a two-time gold medallist.
With this medal, Indian team opened its account at the Games.

Tokyo Paralympics: India Bags Two Medals in F46 Javelin Throw

Indian javelin throwers Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Singh Gurjar won silver and bronze, respectively in the men's Standing Javelin (F46) at National Stadium in Tokyo. Devendra Jhajharia grabbed silver with a personal best throw of 64.35.
This was also his third medal at Paralympic Games. Meanwhile, Sundar captured bronze with a season-best throw of 62.58. Dinesh Priyan Herath Mudiyanselage of Sri Lanka bagged gold in a very comprehensive manner by shattering the World Record with his monstrous throw of 67.79 m.

Brazilians Take First Athletics Golds at Tokyo Paralympics

Brazil's Petrucio Ferreira dos Santos, dubbed the Usain Bolt of para athletics, took gold in Paralympic record time, as US "armless archer" Matt Stutzman began his medal campaign.
Sprinter Ferreira dos Santos capped a successful day for his nation by blazing home in 10.53 for a new Paralympic record and gold in the men's T45 100 m.
His win came after Brazilians earlier claimed the first track-and-field medals of the Tokyo Paralympics, with Yeltsin Jacques kicking things off by squeezing out Japan's Kenya Karasawa to top the podium in the men's 5,000 m T11 final.
Fellow Brazilian Silvania Costa de Oliveira meanwhile took the first gold of the field events, successfully defending the title she won in Rio in the women's T11 long jump.

Tokyo Paralympics: Avani Lekhara First Indian Woman to Win Gold

Indian paralympic shooter Avani Lekhara created history at the Tokyo Paralympics when she became the first woman from the country to bag a paralympic gold medal. Avani won the women's 10 m Air Rifle Standing SH1 title defeating China's Zhang Cuiping (silver) and Ukraine's Iryna Shchetnik (bronze).
Avani also equalled the current WR to win the women's 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 category with her gold medal-winning performance in Tokyo. The 19-year-old finished with a world record equalling total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record.
She's the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016).

Tata Motors Extend Sponsorship of Indian Wrestling Till Paris Olympics

The Wrestling Federation (WFI) of India and Tata Motors have strengthened their long-term partnership further with the announcement of the 'Quest for Gold at Paris Olympics 2024', an objective to win the coveted yellow metal at the next Games.
Young and talented Indian wrestlers will gain assured and enhanced access to world-class training facilities, internationally-reputed coaches and support through a rich nutritional programme. In addition as part of the initiative, eligible senior wrestlers will be offered central contracts, while budding junior wrestlers will be supported through scholarships along with insurance cover, medical and physiotherapy assistance.

UP Government Adopts Indian Wrestling Till 2032 Olympics

In a massive boost for the Indian wrestling, the Uttar Pradesh government has adopted the sport and is expected to pump in an investment of Rs. 170 crore in infrastructure and support to the wrestlers till the 2032 Olympics.
The top boss of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) said that they took inspiration from the Odisha government's support to the sport of hockey and they approached the UP government for a similar assistance to their game.
The WFI President said that this deal with the UP government will allow them to plan exposure trips to foreign countries even for India's Cadet level wrestlers.

Former England captain Ted Dexter Passes Away

Former England captain Ted Dexter has died aged 86.
Dexter, nicknamed "Lord Ted", was an aggressive batsman and part-time seam bowler who played 62 Tests for England after making his debut in 1958 against New Zealand.
He captained England and Sussex in the early 1960s.
Ted was one of England's greatest ever cricketers. He was captain in 30 of his 62 Test matches. Dexter scored 4,502 runs at an average of 47.89 during his test career and took 66 wickets at an average of 34.93.
As a cricket administrator Dexter became chairman of the England selectors between 1989 and 1993.
He also developed a Test player ranking system that was formally adopted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2003 and forms the basis of the governing body's current test rankings.

Canada, UAE and Papua New Guinea Qualify for 2022 U-19 Men's World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the Americas, Asia and EAP qualifiers to the ICC U19 men's cricket World Cup have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The apex body of cricket said that based on guidelines approved by the ICC Development Committee and the ICC Board, the three events cannot be staged.
Therefore, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Papua New Guinea will all progress to the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2022 on the basis of them securing the most wins in the last five U19 qualifying events in each respective region.

G. Sathiyan Wins ITTF Czech Open Title

Indian paddler G. Sathiyan notched up a dominating 4-0 win over Yevhen Pryshchepa of Ukraine in the summit clash to claim the men's singles title at the ITTF Czech International Open. The top seeded Indian is ranked 39th in the world.
Sathiyan had advanced to the final after his Swedish opponent Truls Moregardh retired hurt midway through the semi-final.

First Paralympic Gold Medal Goes to Paige Greco of Australia

Cyclist Paige Greco of Australia claimed the first gold medal of the Tokyo Paralympic Games, winning the 3,000-meter pursuit on the velodrome track. Wang Xiaomei of China was second and bronze went to Denise Schindler.
Greco was born with cerebral palsy, which mostly affects the right side of her body. It was her first Paralympic Games medal.
