Rohan Bopanna to End Davis Cup Career

  • India's top doubles player Rohan Bopanna revealed that he will end his Davis Cup career when the country hosts Morocco in September but the Karnataka player won't be able to play his farewell match in his home state, as desired by him, since the All India Tennis Association (AITA) had already awarded the match to Uttar Pradesh.
  • The 43-year-old Bopanna, who made his Davis Cup debut in 2002 has played 32 matches for India.

Sunil Chhetri Becomes 2nd Highest Goal-Scorer in Asia

  • Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri became the second highest goal-scorer in Asia and fourth highest in international football after his hattrick against Pakistan in the SAFF Championship tournament opening match in Bengaluru. Chhetri's three goals took his tally to 90 goals from 138 matches and only former Iran footballer Ali Daei has more goals, coming from Asian region, with 109 goals in 148 matches.
  • Chhetri surpassed Mokhtar Dahari of Malaysia (with 89 goals) to climb to the fourth spot among the highest goal-scorers in international football. Argentina FIFA World Cup-winning legend Lionel Messi (103 goals), Iran's retired player Ali Daei (109 goals) and legendary Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo (123) are above Chhetri in the goal-scoring list.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor Sets New Asian Shot-put Record

  • Indian shotput thrower Tajinderpal Singh Toor smashed the national and Asian records at the National Inter-State Championships at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
  • Tajinderpal bettered his own national record by throwing a distance of 21.77 meters, also setting a new Asian record and qualified for the World Athletics Championships. He previously held the national record of 21.49 meters but went past his previous best. With this attempt, Tajinderpal became one of the favorites to win a medal at the Asian Games.

  • Max Verstappen won the Canadian Grand Prix from pole position to stretch his Formula One championship lead and take Red Bull's milestone 100th victory.
  • The Dutch led every lap as he took his career tally to 41 wins, stepping up alongside Brazil's late triple champion Ayrton Senna in the record books.
  • Fernando Alonso finished second for Aston Martin at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the Spaniard's sixth podium in eight races, with Britain's seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton third for Mercedes.
  • Red Bull has won every race so far this season and Canada was double world champion Verstappen's sixth of the campaign and fourth in a row.

Hero Intercontinental Cup 2023: India Crowned Champions

  • The Indian men's football team beat Lebanon 2-0 and won the Intercontinental Cup 2023 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. It was India's first win over Lebanon in 47 years and second in eight meetings.
  • Indian captain Sunil Chhetri gave the home team the lead in the first minute of the second half. Forward Lallianzuala Chhangte scored in the 66th minute and doubled India's lead. He also assisted in the first goal and was declared man of the match.
  • The Lebanese football team, 99th in the FIFA rankings and two places above India, had their moments in the match but the visitors lacked finishing in the final and could not get on the score sheet.

Goa CM Launches Mascot for 37th Edition of Indian National Games

  • The official mascot and jersey of the 37th National Games to be held in Goa in October 2023, was launched by the state's Chief Minister. On the occasion of Goa Revolution Day, the move was carried out at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Taleigao, Goa. The unveiling of the official mascot 'MOGA,' a bison representing the distinct identity of Goa, embodied the connection between the Games and the state's heritage.
  • Sports Minister Govind Gaude, Indian Olympic Association Chairperson P.T. Usha, ace boxer M.C. Mary Kom and others, were also present on the occasion.
  • The last National Games edition was held in Kerala in 2015, and Goa was to host the 36th edition in November 2016. However, due to interruptions in 2018 and 2019, given the state's inability to provide the needed infrastructure, the Games were further postponed to 2020. But then again the COVID pandemic had taken over, leading to further uncertainties and postponements.
  • National Games in India are organised by the Indian Olympic Association.
  • The Indian sports ministry affirmed that the National Games will be held every two years, except in years where the Olympics and Asian Games are held.

Bhavani Devi Scripts History, Wins India's First ever Medal at Asian Fencing Championships

  • Olympian Bhavani Devi created history by securing India's first-ever medal, a bronze after losing in the semi-finals of the women's sabre event at the Asian Fencing Championships in Wuxi, China.
  • Bhavani lost to Uzbekistan's Zaynab Dayibekova in a hard-fought semi-finals 14-15, but ensured India its maiden medal in the prestigious event.
  • Bhavani had earlier stunned reigning world champion Misaki Emura of Japan 15-10 in the quarter-finals to script history.
  • Misaki had won the women's sabre gold medal at the 2022 World Fencing Championships held in Cairo.
  • It was Bhavani's first win over Misaki as she had lost all her matches against the Japanese in the past.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty Create History

  • The men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty created scripted history as they became the first ever Indians to lift a Super 1000 title after winning the final of Indonesia Open 2023 badminton championship against Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
  • Satwik and Chirag, who are ranked sixth in the World, beat Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-17, 21-18 in the men's doubles final to claim their first ever Super 1000 title.
  • The Indian pair had earlier cruised into the final, defeating South Korea's Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in three hard-fought games 17-21, 21-19, 21-18 in the first semi-finals.

K.M. Deeksha Clinches Gold in the 1,500m National Inter-state Athletics Championships

  • K.M. Deeksha upset 1,500m National record holder Harmilan Bains for the gold in the
  • National Inter-state Athletics Championships at the Kalinga Stadium, Odisha.
  • Deeksha clocked 4:06.07 for her personal best. She led a pack of four athletes, including Chanda (4:09.39) and Pooja (4:09.52), who breached the Asian Games qualifying mark. Deeksha overtook Harmilan in the last 200m to rewrite the meet record.

First Women's Kabaddi League in Dubai

  • The inaugural edition of India's first-ever Women's Kabaddi League (WKL) commenced with great fanfare in Dubai.
  • This historic event marked the first time that women kabaddi players from across India were given the opportunity to exhibit their skills and prowess on a global stage. The league consists of eight teams, featuring a total of 96 players, each representing Indian states. These teams bear the names of various states, including the Delhi Dynamites, Gujarat Angels, Great Marathas, Haryana Hustlers, Punjab Panthers, Rajasthan Riders, Uma Kolkata, and Bengaluru Hawks.
  • The victorious team will be awarded a prize of approximately half a million dirhams (equivalent to 1 crore INR). The opening ceremony of the IPL-style women's kabaddi league was graced by the presence of Bollywood actor Govinda, who unveiled the coveted trophy. APS Sports, the primary organizer of the WKL, highlighted that this substantial reward exemplifies the league's commitment to acknowledging and appreciating the relentless efforts, dedication, and exceptional talent exhibited by these outstanding athletes.
  • The Women's Kabaddi League will conclude on June 27, at the Shabab Al Ahli Sports Club in Dubai. The league's overarching objective is to enhance the prominence of kabaddi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and empower female athletes from India. It provides a robust platform for these exceptional talents to exhibit their prowess, ultimately inspiring a new generation of kabaddi enthusiasts.

Egypt Wins World Squash Championship

  • Top-ranked Egypt defeated Malaysia 2-1 in the final to emerge champion in the SDAT WSF Squash World Cup in Chennai.
  • In a thrilling final, Egypt fought their way back from 1-0 down to win 2-1.
  • Second-seeded India finished joint third with Japan after losing to Malaysia in the semi-finals.
  • The World Cup was revived this year (2023) after last being held in 2011, in Chennai. It marked the first time that teams were fully gender balanced, with two men and two women competing for each side.
