Latin American Countries to Launch Latam-GPT AI Model

  • A coalition of 12 Latin American countries is set to launch Latam-GPT, the region's first large artificial intelligence language model, in September 2025. Developed as an open-source project, it aims to boost AI accessibility and reflect the unique cultural and linguistic diversity of Latin America.
  • The project is led by Chile's National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA) in collaboration with over 30 regional institutions. Work on Latam-GPT began in January 2023, with support from the regional development bank CAF and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Latam-GPT represents a major step towards technological independence for Latin America, reducing dependence on global AI models primarily trained in English. It seeks to act as a democratising element by making AI applications widely accessible in schools, hospitals, and public services. The initiative also addresses regional challenges like language inclusivity and cultural representation, areas often overlooked by mainstream AI systems.
