UAE Discovers New Natural Jebel Ali Gas Field

  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) discovered huge shallow gas resources called 'Jebel Ali gas field' with estimated reserves of 80 trillion standard cubic feet spanning an area of 5,000 square kilometres in the cross-border area of the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
  • Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the government-owned energy giant, will jointly develop the reservoir with distributor the Dubai Supply Authority (DSA).
  • This discovery will enhance UAE's aim of achieving gas self-sufficiency & also help promote major development projects.

NASA Astronaut to Set New Female Space Record

  • NASA astronaut Christina Koch is set to complete the longest-ever single spaceflight by a woman.
  • When she returns to Earth on Thursday, Koch will have spent 328 days on the International Space Station (ISS), surpassing the previous record held by fellow American Peggy Whitson.
  • Ms Koch will come back in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, parachuting down to a landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan.
  • Her record is just 12 days short of the all-time US record set by Scott Kelly.
  • Mr. Kelly stayed on the ISS from 2015-2016.
  • Ms. Koch surpassed the 289-day record set by fellow American Ms. Whitson on 28 December 2019. But her return to Earth, shortly after 09:00 GMT, will set the marker for future space travellers to beat.

Wristwatch to Boost Athletic Performance

  • Researchers have developed a device the size of a wristwatch which can monitor an individual's body chemistry to help improve athletic performance, and identify health problems. According to a study, the device can be used to detect dehydration, and track athletic recovery with potential applications ranging from military training to competitive sports.

Solar Orbiter Completes Preparation for Launch

  • Europe's grand mission to understand the detailed workings of the Sun is ready for launch.
  • Solar Obiter has been enclosed in its protective cover and mounted atop the rocket that will hurl the satellite towards our star next weekend.
  • SolO, for short, is a €1.5bn (£1.3bn) project of the European Space Agency (ESA) with a big input from the US.
  • Its goal is to help scientists better understand what drives the Sun's dynamic behaviour.
  • Lift-off is currently scheduled for 9th February, 2020.

Australia Scientists Develop Coronavirus in Lab to Help in Vaccine Efforts

  • A team of scientists in Australia has successfully developed a lab-grown version of the new coronavirus, the first to be recreated outside of China, in a breakthrough that could help quicken the creation of a vaccine.
  • The researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne would share the sample, which was grown from an infected patient, with the World Health Organization and laboratories around the world.

  • The Sun's turbulent surface has been revealed in unprecedented detail in the first observations by a newly operational telescope in the US, which scientists say will play a critical role in the better understanding of our star, as well as the space weather.
  • The Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii will enable a new era of solar science, and a leap forward in understanding the Sun and its impacts on our planet. Activity on the Sun, known as space weather, can affect systems on Earth. Magnetic eruptions on the Sun can impact air travel, disrupt satellite communications and cause power cuts.

Two Satellites in Close Shave over US City of Pittsburgh

  • Two satellites hurtling across the sky at nearly 33,000 mph (53,000 km/h) narrowly missed a collision over the US state of Pennsylvania.
  • The last time a major satellite collision occurred was in 2009.
  • Experts predicted that the satellites could pass within 40 ft (12 m) of each other. They are not operational, but it was feared a collision could create pieces of debris that would damage other objects in orbit.
  • The objects in question are an Infrared Astronomical Satellite that was launched in 1983 and another experimental US craft, the GGSE-4 satellite, launched in 1967.
