Three Chinese Astronauts Return To Earth After Six Months In Space

  • The two men and one woman -- Zhai Zhigang, Ye Guangfu and Wang Yaping -- returned to Earth shortly before 10 am Beijing time (0200 GMT), after six months aboard the Tianhe core module of China's Tiangong space station.
  • Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth after 183 days in space, ending China's longest crewed mission as it continues its quest to become a major space power. The Shenzhou-13 spacecraft was the latest mission in Beijing's drive to rival the United States, after landing a rover on Mars and sending probes to the Moon.
  • The world's second-largest economy haD poured billions into its military-run space programme, with hopes of having a permanently crewed space station by 2022 and eventually sending humans to the Moon.

Google Unveils its 'Switch to Android' App for iPhone Users

  • Tech giant Google has quietly launched its most awaited 'Switch to Android' app on the App Store in some countries, including the US. The app promises to make the transition between mobile platforms easier to manage by helping users import their contacts, calendar, photos and videos to their new Android phone.
  • The app also instructs users how to turn off Apple's iMessage to get text messages on their new device and has them connect with iCloud to migrate their photo and video library to Android.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope Confirms Largest Comet Nucleus ever Seen

  • NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has determined the size of the largest icy comet nucleus ever seen by astronomers. The estimated diameter is approximately 80 miles across, making it larger than the state of Rhode Island. The nucleus is about 50 times larger than found at the heart of most known comets. Its mass is estimated to be a staggering 500 trillion tons, a hundred thousand times greater than the mass of a typical comet found much closer to the Sun.
  • The comet has been falling toward the Sun for well over 1 million years. It is coming from the hypothesized nesting ground of trillions of comets, called the Oort Cloud. The diffuse cloud is thought to have an inner edge at 2,000 to 5,000 times the distance between the Sun and the Earth. Its outer edge might extend at least a quarter of the way out to the distance of the nearest stars to our Sun, the Alpha Centauri system.

Rare Close Conjunction of Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Saturn to be Seen in April 2022

  • The last week of April will see Jupiter and Venus coming together with the crescent moon passing below Saturn on 25 April, Mars on 26 April, and finally Jupiter and Venus on 27 April.
  • The month of April will see a rare celestial event as Saturn and Jupiter join Mars and Venus in conjunction.
  • While Mars and Venus had approached each other on 5 April to be closer than the apparent diameter of the moon, Jupiter joined them to form a trio for stargazers on 8 April.

SpaceX, NASA Aim to Launch Crew-4 Mission to ISS No Earlier than April 23

  • NASA and SpaceX now are targeting no earlier than April 23, for the launch of the agency's Crew-4 mission to the International Space Station from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
  • The date provides the agencies time to complete final prelaunch processing for the Crew-4 mission following the launch of the Axiom Mission 1 to the ISS on April 8, 2022.
  • NASA will conduct a flight readiness review, which will focus on the preparedness of SpaceX's crew transportation system, the ISS, and its international partners supporting the flight.

IIT Mandi Researchers Develop Sustainable Methods of Soil Stabilisation Using Bacteria

  • Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi, developed sustainable techniques for soil stabilisation using a harmless bacteria called S Pasteurii that hydrolyse urea to precipitate calcite.
  • The process does not involve hazardous chemicals, and natural resources can be used sustainably. The study will help in designing microbial methods to improve soil shear strength at the field scale to protect the soil from erosion in hilly areas and during geo-disasters, the researchers claimed.
  • Soil stabilisation is the process of conferring long-term permanent strength to the soil by artificial means. It is used when construction work must be carried out on unstable grounds or to protect soil from erosion. Traditionally, mechanical processes such as compression and chemical processes such as the injection of chemical grout fluids into the soil are used for soil stabilisation.
