Chandrayaan-3: Vikram Lander Successfully Separates from Propulsion Module

  • Chandrayaan-3 begins its final countdown to a successful Moon landing. The Indian spacecraft performed a successful separation of the Vikram lander module from the propulsion module, ISRO informed. Now, only a few days are left before the lander module will make an attempt to do a soft landing on the south polar region of the Moon on 23 August. If the Chandrayaan-3 mission succeeds, India will become the fourth country to master the technology of soft-landing by a robotic lunar rover on the Moon's surface after the US, China, and the former Soviet Union.

First Space-based Indian Observatory Aditya-L1, Ready for Launch

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced that India's first space-based solar observatory, PSLV-C57/Aditya-L1 Mission, is ready to launch. This big project marks the country's mission that could revolutionise the understanding of the Sun's dynamics and space weather.
  • Aditya-L1, named after the Sun's core, aims to provide unprecedented insights into the Sun's behaviour by placing itself in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, approximately 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.
  • The spacecraft is equipped with seven advanced payloads designed to scrutinize various layers of the Sun, from the photosphere and chromosphere to the outermost layer, the corona.

Russia Launches its Lunar Lander after almost 5 Decades

  • Russia launched its first moon-landing spacecraft in 47 years in a bid to be the first nation to make a soft landing on the lunar south pole, a region believed to hold coveted pockets of water ice.
  • The Russian lunar mission, the first since 1976, is racing against India, which launched its Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander last month, and more broadly with the United States and China, both of which have advanced lunar exploration programs targeting the lunar south pole.
  • A Soyuz 2.1 rocket carrying the Luna-25 craft blasted off from the Vostochny cosmodrome, east of Moscow.
  • The lander is expected to touch down on the moon on August 21, Russia's space chief Yuri Borisov told state television, though the space agency previously pegged August 23 as the landing date.
