India Ranks 7th in Climate Change Performance Index
India ranked 7th in this year's (2023) Climate Change Performance Index, up one spot from the previous one, and also remained among the highest performers, according to the report released in Dubai during the global climate talks COP28.
Monitoring Climate Mitigation Efforts of 63 Countries plus the EU – covering more than 90 per cent of the Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions, India received a high ranking in the greenhouse gas Emissions and Energy Use categories, but a medium in Climate Policy and Renewable Energy, as in the previous year.

SECL to Adopt Miyawaki Plantation Method
In a significant move towards environmental conservation, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, will be implementing the Miyawaki method of plantation in its Gevra Area in Chhattisgarh. This pilot project, aimed at enhancing the green cover in the coal belt region, is backed by an investment of Rs. 4 crore in partnership with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN).
The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, is known for its rapid growth and dense greenery. SECL's initiative involves planting approximately 20,000 saplings over a two-year period, covering a two-hectare area.

Climate Change to Wipe Out Glaciers on Mt Kilimanjaro by 2040
According to a global weather study, the glaciers on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, are projected to be wiped out by 2040, underlining how climate change is driving extreme events across the world.
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) termed the 2011-2020 period as the warmest decade on record for both land and ocean. Glacier and ice sheet loss and the rise in sea level were unprecedented during this decade.

Gajraj System: AI-Based Elephant Protection on Indian Railways
The Indian Railways initiated a pioneering step towards wildlife conservation by deploying the 'Gajraj system', an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solution designed to prevent elephant fatalities on railway tracks. This surveillance system is being implemented along a 700-kilometer stretch in forest areas to alert locomotive pilots of elephants' presence on the tracks, thereby mitigating the risk of collisions.
