In a positive indication of the district's ecological balance, a boost in urban wildlife has been recorded in a recent census concluded in May. Some species like blackbuck, fox and peacock have doubled their populations over the last eight years.
A hike in the breeding population of certain species like fox, porcupine (sahi), civet (bijju), wild cat and wild boar also made their way to the forest department's checklist of 4,228 animals of over 15 species in the 2019 census.
The last census, held in 2011, recorded 3,692 animals.
The census was held by the district forest department over 20 days in May.

DTTDC Fined for Choking Yamuna
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has imposed an environment compensation of Rs. 5.5 lakh on the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation Ltd (DTTDC) for choking the Yamuna's flow with debris from the Signature Bridge.
The bridge was given an environmental clearance by the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) in February 2017 with "specific conditions" that no waste, including construction spoils, should be dumped into the river and that the river's flow should not be obstructed at any point.
During inspection, DPCC had found that around 3,500 tonnes of construction and demolition debris was lying on the river and choking the flow of the water. To date, around 2,500 tons of debris had already been removed. The rest is being removed.
DPCC has also submitted a report in this regard with the NGT-appointed Yamuna pollution monitoring committee.

Malaysia to Ship Back Plastic Waste
As per reports, Malaysia will ship back hundreds of tonnes of imported plastic waste back to where it came from, as Malaysia did not want to be a global dumping ground.
China had previously taken a large amount of waste for recycling, but abruptly stopped in 2018, saying it wanted to improve its own environment.
Official data showed that plastic imports to Malaysia have tripled since 2016.
The Ministry said that 450 tonnes of contaminated plastic waste in 10 containers, from Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the United States, will be shipped back.

Melting Glaciers
According to a study, melting glaciers worldwide could result in almost 10 inches of sea level rise by the end of this century.
The study indicates that the smaller glaciers could play a much larger role in sea level rise than researchers had previously thought.
The review is the most comprehensive global comparison of glacier simulations ever compiled.
It estimates that glaciers worldwide are likely to lose anywhere from 18 to 36 per cent of their mass by 2100.

G Noida to be First city to Treat Faecal Sludge
Greater Noida city is aiming to become the country's first city treating and recycle faecal sludge and septage, though a private-public partnership model. The objective of the exercise is environmental conservation and ensuring better living and health conditions to its residents.
The Greater Noida authority said that it wants to become eligible for open defecation free (ODF) +++ category.
To be eligible for this category, the city needs to have toilets for all dwellers, zero open defecation or urination, all community or individual toilets in functional condition and treatment or recycling of faecal sludge and septage, among some other parameters.
The authority has also decided to impose a user charge on the 10 lakh residents of the city to generate funds required to develop facilities for treatment and recycling this category of waste, which usually goes into drains or other waterways, polluting water bodies and affecting health.
