UN Climate Summit In New York

The United Nations has kicked off a major climate summit in New York at which some world 60 leaders are expected to deliver their pledges to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions.
Opening the one-day event, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it was now time to act to make the world carbon-neutral by 2050.

Colorful New Bee Species Discovered in Fiji

Australian researchers found colorful new bee species, some of them are already showing signs of exposure to environmental changes.
Flinders University PhD candidate James Dorey — whose macrophotography has captured some of Fiji's newest bee species — says the naming of nine new species gives researchers an opportunity to highlight the risks.
Homalictus terminalis is named so to indicate that, like many Fijian bees, it is nearing its limit and is at risk of climate-related extinction.
Found only on Mount Batilamu near the city of Nadi, where many tourists launch their holidays, H. terminalis has only been found within 95 meters of the mountain peak.

Switzerland Held 'Funeral March' For Lost Glacier

Dozens of people undertook a "funeral march" up a steep Swiss mountainside to mark the disappearance of an Alpine glacier amid growing global alarm over climate change.
The Pizol has lost so much substance that from a scientific perspective it is no longer a glacier.
The organisation which helped organise march said around 100 people took part in the event, set to take place as the UN gathers youth activists and world leaders in New York to mull the action needed to curb global warming.
Dressed in black, they made the solemn two-hour "funeral march" up the side of Pizol mountain in northeastern Switzerland to the foot of the steep and rapidly melting ice formation, situated at an altitude of around 2,700 metres (8,850 feet) near the Liechtenstein and Austrian borders.
A wreath was laid for the Pizol glacier, which has been one of the most studied glaciers in the Alps.

Five-Year Period Ending 2019 Set To Be Hottest On Record

A new UN report has said the world is badly lagging behind in the race to avert climate disaster as a result of runaway warming. The report, which came ahead of major UN climate summit, said that the five-year period ending 2019 is set to be the hottest ever.
The summit will be attended by more than 60 world leaders, as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pushes for countries to increase their greenhouse gas reduction targets.
The World Meteorological Organization in a compiled report said average global temperature between 2015-2019 is on track to be the hottest of any five-year period on record. The period is currently estimated to be 1.1 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial (1850-1900) times and 0.2 degrees Celsius warmer than 2011-2015.
The past four years were already the hottest since record-keeping began in 1850.

Global Climate Strike: Millions Protest Worldwide

Protesters take part in the Global Climate Strike as they march to parliament in Cape Town, South Africa.
People around the world have been walking out of school and work to join the latest protests against the climate crisis. The global day of action, calling for a reduction in emissions, is being held in the run-up to a UN summit in New York
Protesters across continents waved placards and chanted slogans in what could be the biggest ever demonstration over global warming caused by humans.
The day began in the Pacific and Asia and culminated in a massive demonstration in New York.
It comes ahead of a UN summit at the organisation's headquarters in Manhattan. Activists are demanding greater efforts be made at the meeting to tackle climate change.

Ambitious Climate Pledge To Make Amazon Carbon Neutral By 2040

Amazon will become the first signatory of the newly formed "Climate Pledge," a pact announced by company founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years early.
The pledge would require companies to implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris agreement and calls on signatories to be at net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040.
Any remaining carbon emissions would be neutralized with quantifiable and permanent offsets to achieve the pledge's goal.

Industry Players Join Hands To Launch Packaging Waste Management Venture, Aim To Mobilise Rs 1k Cr

To address the growing concern of plastic waste in India, 32 companies including PepsiCo India, Coca-Cola India, Bisleri, Diageo and Reliance Industries have come together to launch a packaging waste management venture and aim to mobilise over Rs 1,000 crore for the purpose.
Developed and incubated by the Packaging Association for Clean Environment (PACE), as part of the venture, the participating companies will mobilise and converge assets, resources and investment upwards of Rs 1,000 crore, which will include the existing infrastructure of the member companies and fresh investments.
The vision of this venture is to ensure that no recyclable packaging material ends up in landfills by 2025.
