Anak Krakatau: Giant Blocks of Rock Litter Ocean Floor

Shattered remnants from the volcano that generated a devastating tsunami in Indonesia a year ago have been pictured on the seafloor for the first time.
Scientists used sonar equipment to image the giant chunks of rock that slid into the ocean when one side of Anak Krakatau collapsed.
Some of these blocks are 70-90 m high.
Over 400 people around the Sunda Strait died in the nighttime disaster, and thousands more were injured and/or displaced.

Deforestation is up in Brazil

According to government data, deforestation in Brazil's Amazon jumped to the highest level for the month of November since 2015. Destruction of the world's largest tropical rainforest totalled 563 square km in November, 2019 103% more than in the same month last year.

Climate Crisis Set to Increasingly Impact Migration

According a report published by by the UN's migration monitor, the impact of climate crisis on migration is expected to increase in the coming years.
In its Global Migration Report 2020, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) pointed out that anthropogenic climate change, originating in human activity, is expected to increasingly affect migration. The report found increasing evidence that the magnitude and frequency of extreme weather events are rising, and this is expected to increasingly affect migration.

Delhi Records Highest Rain for Dec. in 27 Years

Delhi witnessed the highest rainfall recorded in a single day in the month of December in at least 27 years since 1991, from when data has been readily available with the met department. Delhi recorded 33.5 mm rain.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) data shows the highest rainfall ever recorded in the month was on December 3, 1923, when the city received 75.7mm rainfall. In December 16, 2003, 28mm rainfall was recorded.

Deepest Point on Land Found in Antarctica

The deepest point on continental Earth was identified in East Antarctica, under Denman Glacier.
This ice-filled canyon reaches 3.5 km (11,500ft) below sea level. Only in the ocean are the valleys deeper still.
The discovery was illustrated in a new map of the White Continent that revealed the shape of the bedrock under the ice sheet in unprecedented detail.
Its features will be critical to our understanding of how the polar south might change in the future.
For comparison, the lowest exposed land on Earth, at the Dead Sea shore, is just 413 m (1,355ft) below sea level.
This is undoubtedly the most accurate portrait yet of what lies beneath Antarctica's ice sheet.

India Lost 9.4mn Trees in 4 Years

India lost 9.4 million trees across forest areas to development projects over the past four years (2015-16 to 2018-19), the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) informed the Rajya Sabha.
The loss of trees can be equated to the loss of 20.8 crore kg of carbon dioxide per year, which would have otherwise been stored by 9.4 million trees. According to the Forest Survey of India.
According to data tabled by the ministry, of the 94,98,516 trees lost in India over four years, Maharashtra recorded the second highest after Telangana (15,26,663). Meghalaya (371), Kerala (725), Mizoram (748), Delhi (3,236), and Tamil Nadu (5,970), however, recorded least tree-felling over the same period.

EU Leaders to Consider Climate Neutrality Pledge

European Union leaders gathered in Brussels amid a push to commit to making the 28-member bloc climate neutral by 2050.
Some Eastern European countries want financial guarantees before they agree to the EU cutting to zero its net amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
But the new head of the EU's executive body, Ursula von der Leyen, placed it at the heart of a new "Green Deal".
Billions of euros would be added to the EU budget to move from fossil fuels.
The so-called "Just Transition Mechanism" would also include funding from the European Investment Bank and would support states such as Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, which are among the EU member states most reliant on the coal industry.
The new head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that he wanted EU leaders to agree on a commitment to the bloc becoming climate-neutral by 2050.
