NTCA Approves India's 54th Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan

  • India got its 54th tiger reserve in Rajasthan's Karauli and Dholpur districts with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approving a proposal in this regard. This is Rajasthan's fifth tiger reserve after Ranthambore, Sariska, Mukundra Hills and Ramgarh Vishdhari.
  • The number of tigers in India has increased from 2,967 in 2018 to 3,682 in 2022, an annual rise of 6 per cent, according to government data.
  • With a 50 per cent increase in the last four years, Madhya Pradesh has the maximum number of tigers in the country (785), followed by Karnataka (563), Uttarakhand (560), and Maharashtra (444).
  • The number of tigers in Rajasthan has increased from 32 in 2006 to 88 in 2022.

India's First Hydrogen Bus Hits the Public Roads in Leh, Ladakh

To realize this vision, the company is orchestrating the establishment of a cutting-edge hydrogen fuelling station and an expansive solar plant, boasting a capacity of 1.7 MW. These dual infrastructure components play a pivotal role in providing renewable power to facilitate the hydrogen mobility project.

Spotless Giraffe, Incredibly Rare and Only One of its Kind in World, Born at zoo in Tennessee

  • In one of the rarest incidents seen in the animal kingdom, a spotless baby giraffe was born at The Brights Zoo, Tennessee the US and is believed to be the only singularly coloured giraffe in the world.
  • Giraffe experts believe she is the only solid-coloured reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet.
  • The female giraffe is uniformly brown in colour and lacks the distinctive patched pattern commonly found in giraffes and also the exceptionally long necks, they are famous for.

Jitendra Singh Unveils New Lotus Variety 'Namoh 108'

  • Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh unveiled a new variety of lotus flower with 108 petals, named "Namoh 108", developed by the city-based National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI).
  • The "NBRI Namoh 108" lotus variety flowers from March to December and is the first flower whose genome is completely sequenced for its characteristics.
  • Considering the religious importance of the lotus flower and 'the digit 108', this combination gives an important identity to this variety.

A New Snake Species Named after Harrison Ford

  • Researchers from Germany, the United States and Peru named a newly discovered species of snake after actor Harrison Ford.
  • Ford famously played Indiana Jones, who himself had some perilous encounters with snakes.
  • The German Society for Herpetology and Herpetoculture (DGHT) announced the naming of Tachymenoides harrisonfordi to recognise the Hollywood actor's environmental advocacy.
  • Ford's namesake snake measures 16 inches (40.6 centimetres) in length and is yellowish-brown with scattered black blotches, a black belly and a vertical streak over its copper-coloured eye.

Govt. Launches 'FloodWatch' App for Real-time Flood Updates

  • Amid a rise in flood-related incidents in the country, including loss of life and property, the government launched an app to disseminate real-time information on the flood situation in affected areas.
  • The 'FloodWatch' app will collect data from 338 stations to send real-time flood updates across 23 states and Union Territories.
  • The app aims to use mobile phones to spread flood-related information and even provides forecasts for up to 7 days.
  • The app uses advanced technologies such as satellite data analysis, mathematical modelling, and real-time monitoring to deliver accurate and timely flood forecasts.
