Gurugram Kala Utsav

  •  Gurugram Kala Utsav was started in 2017 to celebrate the Indian classical art forms. In its third year now, the annual festival is a cultural amalgam of classical Indian dance forms, such as kathak, bharatnatyam, kuchipudi and odissi, folk music, and Hindustani vocal and instrumental renditions.
  • Incidentally the festival falls on the same weekend as the popular Gurgaon Utsav, a festival that brings Sufi and fusion music, poetry and dramatic performances to city audiences.
  • The festival will take place at the Aravalli Biodiversity Park.
  • The two-day fest is being organised by an Odissi dance academy, and a not-for-profit organisation and supported by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram.

Thakurani Jatra Festival

  •  Preparations for the famous biennial Thakurani Jatra festival in Odisha's Berhampur began with the hoisting of the holy mast or 'shubha khunti'.
  • According to Desibehera P. Durgaprasad, the traditional head of this festival, the celebrations will start from March 29 and continue for 32 days.
  • Goddess Budhi Thakurani is the traditional deity of silk handloom weavers or the Dera community of Berhampur.
  • On the night of March 29, an earthen pot representing the deity would be carried in a procession from the permanent temple to her temporary abode at Desibehera Street.

150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

  •  The 20th edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with four plays on his life, philosophy, and principles.
  • Organised by National School of Drama (NSD), the "largest theatre festival in Asia" will open in Delhi on February 1 with "Karanth Ke Rang", a performance directed by Amod Bhatt based on songs composed by late B V Karanth, a stalwart of Kannada and Hindi theatres.
  • The plays , "Bapu" by Samir Biswas, "Stay Yet a While" by M K Raina, "Satya Ke Prayog" by Devendra Raj Ankur, and "Hind Swaraj" by Arjun Deo Charan will pay tribute to the father of the nation.
  • The festival will host 69 Indian and 15 foreign plays in addition to nine folk productions, five plays by the institute's diploma students, one production from the Sikkim centre of National School of Drama, three plays by the National School of Drama Repertory as well as five invitee plays by eminent theatre practitioners.
  • The festival also has eight folk performances.
  • International productions from countries such as Bangladesh, Poland, Russia, Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic, Italy, Nepal, Romania and Singapore are lined up for the Bharat Rang Mahotsav .

Smita Patil International Film Festival

  •  The Smita Patil International Film Festival, Pune (SPIFF), which aims to showcase short films and documentaries from across the world and promotes storytellers, will be held on December 8 and 9, 2018. 
  • Started in 2012, this year marks the seventh year of the festival and in its current edition it has received more than 1,000 films from 60 countries and only 60 films have been selected for screening. 

Military Literature Festival Inaugurated

  •  A three-day (December 7-9) annual military literature festival kicked off with hundreds of schoolchildren, military historians from India and abroad, authors, and serving and retired military personnel in attendance.
  • This is the second edition of the festival, the first one was held last year.
  • Punjab Governor V. P. S. Badnore inaugurated the festival.

Khalsa College 's Sikh Centre to Digitise Painting

  • Khalsa College is set to launch the second phase of digitisation of rare photographs, paintings, and important documents at the Sikh History Research Centre on the campus.
  • Manuscripts and handwritten documents were digitised during the first phase. The second phase will focus on digitisation of images related to Sikh heritage.
  • These include photographs of heroes of the two World Wars, pictures of gurudwaras in Pakistan clicked in the 19 century, and paintings of Sikh warriors such as Hari Singh Nalwa.
  • The museum displaying documents of historical importance, weapons, coins and historical artefacts is also being upgraded at the centre.

Fifth Edition of Urdu Fest

  • The fifth edition of Jashn-e-Rekhta, touted as one of the world's biggest Urdu language festivals, will begin on December 14 with an address by popular Hindu poet Morari Bapu, also an exponent of Ramcharitmanas - a 16th century epic.
  • The highlight of the three-day festival, which will be held at Dhyan Chand Stadium near India Gate, would be a poetry competition (mushaira) for women and a Ramlila performance in Urdu.
  • The organisers said that the event aims at uniting Urdu lovers and engage, enlighten and entertain audiences from diverse backgrounds.
  • In the next two days, a discussion with Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi will bring to fore the life and works of Jan Nisar Akhtar, Javed's father and Kaifi Azmi, Shabana's father.
