India, Madagascar Sign MoU on Tele-education & Tele-medicine

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Madagascar government and Telecommunications Consultants India Limited for participation in the e-VBAB (e-VidyaBharati and e-AarogyaBharati) network project.
  • The Minister of Higher Education of Madagascar Elia Beatrice Assoumacou signed the MoU at the premises of the Ministry of Higher Education in Antananarivo, Madagascar in presence of the Ambassador of India to Comoros and Madagascar Abhay Kumar.
  • The technological upgradation and extension of the Pan African e-Network Project is known as e-VidyaBharti and e-ArogyaBharti Network Project. The Republic of Madagascar participated in the PAeNP. Now, with the signing of this MOU, different online degree/diploma courses will be offered to Malagasy citizens, free of cost. The students can go on the online portal and register themselves for the courses.
  • A total of 26 major Indian universities (including Andhra University, Chandigarh University, Amity University Indira Gandhi National Open University) are participating in the project offering more than 300 different courses in Management, Computer Science, Commerce, Science, Health care, Humanities and Arts.

India's First Locally Created HPV Vaccine Receives DCGI Approval

  • India's first Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus vaccine (qHPV) against cervical cancer got Drugs Controller General of India's (DCGI) approval for market authorisation. This vaccine would be manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII).
  • The Serum Institute of India's CEO Adar Poonawalla said that for the first time, there will be an Indian HPV vaccine to treat cervical cancer in women that is both affordable and accessible.

NTPC Launches Girl Empowerment Mission in Assam

  • The country's largest power producer NTPC rolled out a four-week long empowerment programme for underprivileged girls in Assam to train 40 minors in different skills. The programme — Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) — is being conducted by the power major across the country since 2018 and was launched in Assam for the first time.
  • Rolling out the initiative, NTPC Executive Director (Bongaigaon Plant) Subrata Mandal said that the company is conducting the programme for the first time in Assam to uplift the underprivileged girls.
  • The NTPC GEM programme will empower girls by making them aware of basic education, health and self-defence. With this initiative, NTPC aims to help these girls break the glass ceiling and dispel the misconception about female foeticide in rural areas.

Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Implement NEP at Pre-primary Level

  • Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to initiate process of implementing the Centre's New Education Policy, with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurating 'Bal Vatikas' at anganwadi kendras across the state to strengthen the pre-primary education system.
  • The 'Bal Vatikas' would function at 4,457 anganwadi kendras in the state and would be equivalent to the nursery classes at a private school.
  • Dhami said that the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) marks the beginning of culture-based education in the country focusing on the overall personality development of students.

Dr. Jayakara is New Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University

  • Governor of Karnataka and chancellor of Bangalore University Thaawarchand Ghelot appointed Dr. Jayakara SM, principal and head of the department of prosthodontics at Maruthi College of Dental Sciences & Research Centre as the vice chancellor of Bangalore University for a period of four years.

St Joseph's College in Bengaluru Upgraded to a University

  • St Joseph's College (Autonomous) is now upgraded to St Joseph's University, announced the management of the university. The government of Karnataka formally conferred the status after passing the St Joseph's University Bill in February 2021.
  • Established in 1882, the St Joseph's College is one of the oldest colleges in Karnataka managed by the Karnataka Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Some of the notable alumni from the college include scientist Raja Ramanna, scientist and activist Amulya Reddy, former chief election commissioner T. S. Krishnamurthy, political leaders M. Y. Ghorpade, Kumar Bangarappa, Rajeev Gowda, historian Janaki Nair and others.

PIVOT: AI-based Tool to Detect Cancer

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) developed an Artificial Intelligence-based tool, PIVOT, that can predict cancer-causing genes in an individual. This early information can not only help prevent cancer but even devise personalised cancer treatment strategies.
  • The tool is based on a machine learning model that classifies genes as tumour suppressor genes, oncogenes or neutral genes. The tool was able to successfully predict both the existing oncogenes and tumour-suppressor genes like TP53, and PIK3CA, among others, and new cancer-related genes such as PRKCA, SOX9 and PSMD4.

IGNOU Launches MAJMC in Hindi and Tamil for Online, ODL Mode

  • The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched a new programme — MA in Journalism and Mass Communication in two Indian languages.
  • While the MAJMC programme is already being offered in English language, in both online, and open and Distance Learning modes, it will now be offered in Hindi and Tamil.
  • The programme has been launched by the School of Journalism and New Media Studies (SOJNMS) to integrate recommendations of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It is being introduced with the aim to facilitate the teaching-learning process in various Indian languages.

IIT Roorkee Launches Executive Programme in Business Analytics for Professionals

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-Roorkee) launched an executive program in Business Analytics for Strategic Decision Making. The course will be offered via ed-tech platform Simplilearn.
  • The Business Analytics for Strategic Decision-Making program, as per IIT-Roorkee, will help understand the essentials of business analytics such as statistics, predictive analytics, prescriptive analytics, and machine learning techniques, data visualization, data storytelling, and much more, along with the real-world applications of analytics across multiple business functions.
  • As per IIT-Roorkee, the program is best suited for professionals with at least 6 years of work experience from a wide range of industries and backgrounds such as Business Analysts, mid to senior-level managers, C-suite executives, consultants, and business heads who aspire to apply analytics to make more efficient business decisions.

Union Health Ministry and Panchayati Raj Ministry Sign MoU with Aim to Eliminate TB in India

  • Union Health Ministry and Panchayati Raj Ministry signed an MoU with the aim to eliminate TB in India. The MoU was signed by Dr. Bijaya Kumar Behera, Economic Adviser on behalf of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and Dr. P Ashok Babu, Joint Secretary on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
  • The MoU will forge inter-Ministerial collaboration and strategic partnerships with the aim to achieving the Prime Minister's ambitious target of eliminating TB in India by 2025.

Punjab Technical University Gets B in First-ever NAAC Grading

  • Punjab's first technical university found itself in a piquant situation with National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarding it grade B in its first-ever inspection for the assessment of the 'quality status' even as several colleges affiliated with it secured A+ or A grade. To put things in perspective, A+ equals rank 2 in the NAAC in the eight-grade NAAC rating in which the IK Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) was at rank 6.
  • The NAAC, an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC), assesses and accredits institutes of higher education. The highest grade it awards is A++ followed by A+, A, B++, B+, B, C, and D.
  • The NAAC found the 25-year-old state-run university lagging in "research, innovations, and extension". The PTU, as it is popularly known, has applied for a review.
